Hey all, I hope you're are all well and keeping safe.
I recently treated myself to the Vodacom R300 black Friday deal, 300GB day time 300GB night time.
I'm finding it hard to use up all the data myself so I want to buy a small router that is portable, battery that lasts, and gives good speed.
I don't want to buy a piece of junk I want something that will last for many years to come.
I was eyeing the TP-link on Telkom's website but not sure of its Telkom only.

Any help and recommendation will be much appreciated.

Oh, none of Telkom devices are network locked.

If you're going to spend money, get one that is LTE-A capable.

On my crappy LTE-A Zyxel I was getting around 70mbps. Don't get a Zyxel, they're crap with crap firmware and don't last. Mine started having problems after a year.

If you're really going for bang, get a MIFI that is 5G capable.

@Chris_Auc Those 5G mifi devices are too expensive. You might aswell buy a Samsung A22 5G or Xiaomi 5G device for the price.

We don't have much to choose from for mifi devices in SA.

I would buy this while its on sale. Screenshot_20211208-172022_takealot.jpg

Try to go for a router that's CAT6 or higher if you can for the extra capacity and speed headroom. The E5885 is great as the battery lasts about 24 hrs, 100mbps ethernet, 2.4/5g and, and, and, but the price has been high, with the exception of the rain promo ages ago. Bonus if its a huawei that can switch bands via huaCTRL on android or windows equivalent. Keep in mind routers in these price ranges usually go from 2k upwards. CAT4 routers are cheaper and more available but generally lack speed if the network isn't optimal.

I had this TP Link mifi, the battery is a problem. Also the battery indication is either fully charged or dead. Won't recommend buying this mifi.

To be honest they all suck. Had an Alcatel from MTN with great speeds but lasted a year. Got a Zyxel from them the next time and it didn't even last a year.

Get a cheapie huawei lte-a capable phone or similar or just datashare using the MTN app and leave the sim in a cupboard as I do.

EDIT: Not sure how and if data sharing may or may not work on Vodacom.

On MTN it's simple. Add the number and forget about ever using your actual data again.

Can anyone recommend this MIFI?

I cannot comment on this specific model, but I have a ZTE router and it's absolutely shyte!

I have this model ZTE MF927U

takealot

Firstly the firmware is atrocious, you cannot check your SMS messages through the app. You get the notifications but you simply cannot view them, its a known problem and people have been complaining about it for ages yet ZTE have done zero to rectify it. Also signal strength is crap, once I've walked about 10m in direct line of sight of my router I can barely reach one bar of signal strength. I'd say stay away from ZTE is cheap Chinese rubbish for a reason.

Just get a Huawei E55xx from one of the providers. Batteries last quiet a while and should last you the contract period.

Think I might buy this one.

This is my current setup for the time being XD. Working quite well got a 17500 mAh battery pack strapped to the router, and it stays on the hole day. I get 50 Mbps+ does not matter where I am. Just throw it behind my car seat in the morning and forget about it.

Is that a 12V powerbank that you have connected to the B618? My B618 needs a bit more than 5V to operate. Maybe you have a small 5V to 12V boost converter at the back of the unit?

This is the battery pack I have hooked up. No converter, just works :)

My Hisense one was pretty cheap at around R500 and use it daily both at home and work (I work on site at factories). No problems at all.
