Best offline navigation for android?

That's exactly how google maps works as well. Search for free, let it start navigation then switch off data and it does its thing...
Unlike google maps, it looks like Navfree allows you to navigate to addresses/POI/Favorites without the need for an initial connection.

-tested it quick, seems to be the case, map is outdated though.

Edit: I also see that many street names are missing.

It's a pity Samsung isn't bundling an offline navigation app on all the premium phones. The S2 had it and so did the N2. Would be cool if they offered something for the S4 and N3.

Drive and Walk is on of the most used apps on my S2.

i got it for free on the Note 3

Navigon by Garmin was free on the Note 2.
When trying to reload it onto my Note 3, it showed that I have to pay R380-00 for the South African mapset.
Then there are still further costs involved, for the Safety Camera's, lane assist and other features.

The latest maps from Garmin, as compiled by Navteq, are inferior to the original mapsets, made by Garmap.
Various streets are missing, misspelt or incorrectly marked.

Contacted Navigon South Africa to see whether I could download the Navigon by Garmin navigation app onto my Note 3.
According to the rep it should show as a free download in the Play Store.
Searching for it all I could find was the Navigon South Africa app, which costs in the region of about ZAR380.

On the Samsung Apps store the app is available.
Search for NAVIGON BY GARMIN, and if your device supports the app, it will show up.

So far I have downloaded it onto my Note 2 and Note 3.

It is a large download, with the initial download being about 25Mb, and then the mapset/s update being about 550-600Mb.
You can choose various Southern African countries to include in the download.

After loading the app, I tested it by driving to various addresses in Pretoria, and it works flawlessly.

I ended up getting both TomTom and Sygic. While Sygic isn't bad the TomTom app is just better in the way it guides you. For exmple sometimes at traffic circles Sygic will point you to the wrong exit on the voice promt. One example was sygic telling me to take the first exit when the one it showed on the map was the 3rd. TomTom always got this right. The TomTom has a little glitch in display and I'm not sure if it is just on the Galaxy S4. Sometimes in the 3D map view it draws lines accross the bottom of the screen that should not be there, they flicker in and out a little. Not a train smash but not very nice. Switching to 2D Map removes it.

So far Sygic works pretty well for half the price of TomTom. I'll probably buy the Garmin one too..... just so I can see.

Right now I might lean to Sygic since I like the easier search function and also the fact that it is half the price of the TomTom app for Southern Africa only. For the same price as TomTom you can get Sygic with maps for the whole world.

If anyone has any questions about the apps I'll try and answer.

Got the Navigon one. It's very good but voice promts sometime don't line up with the actual map directions. "Bear left" when in fact you need to go straight. Tom Tom didn't ever do this. So for the best accuracy it looks like TomTom wins. Navigon is very nice for about half the price and sygic has a lot of goodies the other two don't in the way things can be displayed.

The Samsung App Store has the Navigon by Garmin, which is free for us here in South Africa.

You will notice that the "bear left" or whatever direction they give, is an approximation of the route. When the road splits into two or more options, they will give you the most likely bearing.

What I like about the Navigon product is the lane assist function, which shows which lane to take when exiting a highway.

Not on the Samsung App Store on my S4.

Also an example today with the bear left thing was an intersection where it told me to bear right where I could only take a slipway left, go straight or turn right at the traffic light. Tom Tom has never given me something like this. Tom Tom and Sygic both also have the lane assist.

I've bought both Navigon and Sygic. Sygic is far superior in directions to Navigon. Their support is also far better as they always respond to emails. I lost all respect for Navigon when I was told that they could not support me as my device was non-standard as it was rooted (but running a totally standard Samsung OS).

If you want to go off-road/off-track, you can't beat GPS Essentials.

Did not read thread so not sure if mentioned.

Been using CoPilot for about 2 years now and very happy with it. Works as long as GPS is enabled, can even put phone in airplane mode, just as long as GPS is running. Maps are detailed with lots of POI etc... CoPilot can also be move to the SD card so you save space on your phones memory.
