Hi,

Does anyone know what the best option is for internet access in Underberg/Midlands area?

Thanks,
Justin

Search on coverage area maps

I suggest that you look at the coverage maps of the various mobile broadband service providers in South Africa CLICK HERE. In outlying areas with no cellular coverage, satellite broadband could be a better option.

Are you talking about in town or in the district? What I can say the is no 8ta here. Depending where you are either Vodacom or Mtn. I believe CellC works too but haven't tried it myself.

All the mobile networks are edge, as far as I know there is no 3g. At our place on the drak gardens road, I only get gprs when I am there with the latency around the 3 second mark. I have tried vodacom, mtn and cellc with all have almost identical lack of speed.

I think there is adsl but it would depends on your distance to the exchange.

There is full mtn hsdpa/h+ in some areas like close to Bushmans Nek border post and in Himeville. On our farm I get 3G or Hsdpa but only one or 2 bars. We have a repeater link from the farm back to town which gives us ADSL. There are options but would need to know where you need it.

Vodacom 3G in Himeville, not in Underberg.CellC piggybacks off Vodacom so only in Himeville.MTN very strong in Underberg for the past month...must be new tower.

Not sure when you were last at Drak Gardens but MTN 3G is very good.

Best option for Underberg, is to spend boat loads of cash, buy up Lake Navarone and then forget that the rest of the world exists. :)

Honestly though, if I could afford it and there was acceptable wired internet in the area I would live up there without any question.

I used to have a 4Mb line (Max 4Mbs) and have since downgraded to 1Mb and have an extremely reliable internet connection. The outlying areas battle a bit but those close to the exchange in Himeville and Underberg (within 2-4 km) have a good connection. So,move!!

Nah, has to be Lake Naverone :( I fell in love with the place... so I would need a 35km trench with my own exchange :D

Screw the trench, attach one end of fiber optic spool to floatation device and let it float all the way down the river to where the bridge/turnoff is and the string it up onto telkom's poles for the remaining few km.

Also love lake navarone, they've become very pricey though from when I first went there in 95/96.

TankFish, where exactly are you located as it makes a big difference?

My one mate owns a property across the road from Everglades between Boston and Dargle. There was a tower at Everglades (everglades_hotel_MN1) about 200m away and another tower <2km away, both you could see from his property but all they supported was crappy edge and as soon as the mist rolled in you got no signal.

Hi,

Thanks for all the feedback. The place is in Underberg itself. Opposite the Underberg Country Club.

Are you gonna be there permanently or just for a short period?

If permanently or for a good few months get ADSL, exchange is not to far away.
