The fact that you have to be close to an enemy just doesn't do it for me. I've been thinkin about playing a Druid.
Druid's best/easiest leveling is in catform which is up close and personal, so if you're not into melee at all druid won't solve that problem...you CAN play druid like a mage but it's not going to be efficient until much much later . Typical example : Druids don't get a quick/cheap spell to keep mobs from running up to you [roots only work indoors and isn't exactly a fast cast] , compared to mages which have a whole range of frost spell that slow + stop mobs from getting near you.
Druid you'll probably be casting your spells, and then shift into a melee form when they too close.
However if you want to experience 4 classes in one without leveling 4 classes, go druid.
Druid leveling is much like a rogue [once you get catform] , so it's high DPS and stealth and all based on energy and combo points.
Druid instancing/group you'll probably be either a healer [priest] and casting the pretty descent healing arsenal of spells you got...
or
you'll be tanking in bearform using the warrior's rage mechanism. As bear you generate crazy aggro , so easy to keep mobs hitting you and not all the squishy clothies .
..but the awesome part, you can literally fill any role in a group..if a group got a healer+tank you dps..and trust me catform dps can get pretty hectic and actually gets close to other DPS classes like rogues.
And then there's always the Balance Specced druids which is much like playing a mage where you cast spells in a distance using mana pool].
I love my druid atm, actually tried other classes but i keep missing the flexibility i had. If i need to take on an elite or mutliple mobs, i go bear and tank 'em...shape out heal etc. If it's squishies i DPS them in catform . If i can't get close, i get them with moonfire/starfire like spells . If i just need to get a quest item in the middle of a village, i stealth ..grab it and run. You obviously get a few other non-combat forms like aquatic form and travelform. Few classes can keep up with a druid in water , too bad there isn't alot of quests/stuff happening in the water .
Oh and you get flightform at lvl 68 , saving you at least 800g where other classes have to learn + buy a flying mount at lvl 70 (but that's jsut a bonus, i wouldn't pick druid because of this).
