What would be the best pc gaming and math lab (simmulation running) wise for around R5000-R6000.

Any advice on a nice rig?

Screen and sound excluded.

Maybe give my a quick list of the specs :)

Thanks in advance.

Try the following:
Core2Quad (for matlab, it will love 4 cores) R2100
2x2GB DDR2 800 JetRAM (I have this, it's awesome) R800
Gigabyte P45 motherboard R1200
500W PSU + Gigabyte chassis R700
9600GT 512MB R1400
250GB HDD R550
Samsung/LG DVD Writer R250

R7000. It's not easy getting something for R6k. Can you save more by any chance? These prices are average prices available. Try phoning Ecomp and asking for Ettiene. He will be able to help you with something nice.... and mention cash.

And obviously you need to add a Keyboard and mouse.

Thanks for the reply :)

Well I have a new power supply and I have a motherboard that is 100% for what I need :) thus taking R1900 of your price :p

Can you maybe tell me if these are ok prices in general? www.pcint.co.za/components.php

Thanks :)

I just bought my self a new pc

Core2Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
Gigabyte sp3l(Something like that) DDR2 1200
Kingston 3Gig Ram
Samsung DVD Writer
Force3D HD 4850
500W PSU + Gigabyte X3 Chassis
320 Gig Seagate Sata HDD + CoolerMaster xCraft 360 Lite Case
80 Gig HDD
LOGITECH Wireless KB and mouse
Windows vista ultimate

For R8300.00

For gaming the E8400/E8500 would be better, but for any calculations (Matlab, graphics rendering, etc) the Quad Core will speed you up by around 15%.

Good idea. The pc would have cost R1000 less than it does now if it wasn't for the current exchange. The prices are going to go up more though. The Rand weakened by 50%...

Anyone know of a really cheap place I can buy hardware? I have a case an a power supply and a screen and sound(speakers).

Any suggestions for R5000-R6000 on a nice machine a can build?

Devill, you should worry about processing power for MATLAB. I have a c2d 2.2 laptop, and i only need to pull it out of power saver when i'm doing large image processing or when i have to solve PDE's (and thats cos of all the matrix calculations). Any machine in the c2d range should handle MATLAB pretty well.

PCInt will probably be cheapest...

Thanks fr the replies :)

Can you guys maybe suggest some specs for the rig?

I am not a PC boffin :o

P5K-SE ASUS Intel P35, LGA775, 1600FSB, 4xDual DDR2 1200, 1x PCI-x16, 3xPCIx1, 2xPCI, 1xATA100, 4xSATAII, Gbe Lan, 8ch-Sound, Max 12xUSB, ATX R 876
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz (1066FSB 8MB) R 1,899
2GB DDRII-800 (Transcend) R 299 (or 2 x 1GB)
250GB-7200RPM 8MB Cache R 550
DVD Writer 22/12x DL (Samsung oem) - SATA II R 199
HD 3870 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO R 1,159

Rougly R5700 incl. Go for the HD4850 if you can squeeze out a bit more.

PC Int is ok for prices but don't forget to add vat !

I found good prices at Prophecy.

I got A Quad core duo and the Ati 3870 for under 5k... runs like a beaut.

It all depends what you want to spend on a graphics card and cpu. For serious gaming you don't really want to go below an 8800GT, the 9600GT listed above is also a viable option but rather go with DDR3 than the 512 IMO.

How about an E7200 listed here at R1300 (prices have gone up so much recently, yikes!)

I'm not really a big fan of the 3850's but they're priced well and for budget gaming you can't really beat it.

Also PCintl prices are good but remember they are VAT exlusive.

*edit* nerfherder beat me.

Actually rather go for the Q6600 with G0 stepping as PP listed. You can OC them to 3.6 on air very easily. You'll be future proofed and you'll have more than enough power for what you need to do at the moment.

Would you consider going second hand on a graphics card? You're already saving some money because you have a mobo. This is a pretty good price.

Actually which mobo do you have? You might need to upgrade that as well tbh.

Lol, will have to check at home which mobo I have :p

Also I have 1.2Gram aswell thus saving on ram a bit :D

Well, I mean...if you want a relatively high performance rig you might have to start from scratch. There's not much point using a quad core CPU in an older mobo, same with anything less than 2gb DDR2800 ram. If so then my recommendation is the same as PP - an Asus P5. Rather not go with Gigabyte, I'm having a bad experience with mine. AsRock are also supposed to be good.

But then your overall costs are going to go up, so you're going to have to skimp in other places.

Let's see - 2000 for a Q6600, 900 for a P5 mobo, 400 for 2gb ram (get a single stick and you can always upgrade later, ram is cheap), 1200 for GPU, 500 for a 250gb HDD, 400 for chassis, 250 for DVD. That brings you to R5650. Not too bad all things considered. But really consider upping the GPU if you can stretch it.
