Best route to take for a new GPU

So have an opportunity to upgrade my GPU, budget sadly isn't unlimited, if I go new best I can do is a GTX1650 as I need to replace my PSU, however I currently have a RX460. Main issue with that while the GTX1650 is faster, it isn't a massive 100% faster upgrade, with the gpu prices and all that, for the price it isn't worth while upgrade buying new, secondhand one is about 3.8k ish which is reasonable.

Not planning on selling the RX460 it is going into a secondary system with an iCore5 4590 as this is essentially a backup PC in the event of a breakdown or hardware failure. I am considering going secondhand, and bumping the budget a little and get a 1070GTX or RX580. I have seen them go around R7K more or less, but I am shyte scared of plopping down 7K for a GPU out of warranty, that has been mined the shyte out of.

Given the situation, would you rather get the GTX1650 (around 5.5k) or take a risk on a secondhand card. Cards I am looking at are GTX1060, GTX1070, GTX1660, RX580. Budget is 7K, could likely push a bit to 7.5.

RTX 4000 series should be launching later this year which should bring that 1070 down more on the secondhand market although I presume you don't want to wait that long.
 
I would wait until the RX 6500 XT is in stock. Just to compare it to the 1650, but used at your budget, I would explore 2060 cards. I saw a used 2060 SUPER priced @ ~R 7500 on Carb, IIRC, not too long ago, and it still had a good warranty. However, I would wait. I want to buy a new high-end PC, but I deem the market to be excessively priced. The problem being that I don't believe that it will restore any time soon in the next 1-3 years, and being OT here, the allocations suck.
 
Well I think it really is going to depend how urgently you want it, both Nvidia and AMD are releasing a new GPUs this month and while they will be overpriced it may put some downward pressure on the current stack of older cards and used cards.

If you can wait a bit I would just to see how the market shakes out from the new releases this month.

I saw need to get PSU so no go, went with the special on the GTX 1660 on wootware for 7.2K. I need it for work, The RX460 simply can't keep up any more, with the software, and can't wait any longer.

To me it's is far to risky to get a secondhand card..... with little warranty or no warranty when you splashing out 7k. Bought a AMD 5870 many moons back and the card started artifacting within 2 weeks or so after getting it, might have been the shipping, who knows back then it was still 2.5k down the drain.

I think it is pretty decent....upgrade over the RX460

Hey if it's for work, it is what it is, just unfortunate about the current market.

First GPU in 5 years lol, pity thought it isn't a super or Ti.

BTW being out of the loop for so long, how does the 1660 compare to the 1060 and 1070

Now I have to go hunting for the PSU, my current 850 watt andyson is 8 this year, so about time to replace it as well :(

It's not far off a 1070 really, very much title dependent though on FC6 it outright beats the 1070 while on F1 2021 the 1070 comes out ahead.
You definitely won't be disappointed going from a RX 460 that's huge jump.

I don't care much for games, the work software is quite demanding.The new DX12 engine I am working with, I had to turn down most of the settings and stuff as I couldn't test it properly at full settings. It is a must that I am able to test out content I add, while editing is smooth, testing out ingame I rarely exceed 40FPS, with low 20's most of the time.

Why do you need a new psu? Also the 1660ti normally was equivalent to the 1070, scary at the start of 2020 I got the 2060 super for less then that. The 1660ti I paid R4699 in 2019, pricing is ridiculous.

PSU is a bit on the old side.Basically been in use daily for 12 or more hours a day for 8 years, definitely lost a few watts along the way, as is normal for a PSU...however the 1660 one needs one 8 pin and 450 watts, because I don't upgrade often enough will likely get a 700 watt, which should last another 8 years.

It is just about longevity of the rig of the rig iam after, and not being caught with my pants down.Yes wanted to get a GPU around 2019, but I kept on putting it off as it was fine at the time, school fees I guess.

Iol iam still rocking a icore7 4770k, there has been no need to upgrade the CPU either, I guess another year or two, I will be forced to upgrade that as well, still 4770k performance is still good consider 99% of games collection isn't older then 2016, haven't bought a new game is some time, newest game a have is fallout 4.Don't game that much any more, not much time for it....do occasionally feel the need to muck about in a game, but I haven't actively gamed in maybe 4-5 years.

Csgo being the exception...... I haven't even touched games like rocket league, fortnite, pubg, battlefield ect.

You don't need a 700w psu, you could get away with 600 with a 1660 and your CPU, the 850 was way overkill anyway.

Please for the love of all that you deem holy, this is not Apple. It is a Core i7, not a iCore 7.

Price difference between 600 and 700 is a 100 bucks or none in most cases, well depends on the brand, looking at about 1.5k- 1.7k budget, either going to be evga or antec, would love to get another andyson, but a bit pricey at 2.5k.Both the evga and antec is full modular.As I mentioned PSU do lose wattage over time, whether a R5 or R10 PSU caps ageing and drying up is standard fair, upgrading maybe every 5 years.30-40% overhead isn't a bad thing for long term use.

If you upgrade every other year then you can get away with 10-20% overhead, for infrequent upgrades more overhead is better.

Yup but a 20% overhead for an i7 4770 and a 1660 would be 420 with 1 sata ssd + 1 sata hdd.

So generally the max it would be is 350 W
 
Just pick a 2nd hand card that is crap at mining.
