Best Smartphone network

I have no problems on my Vodacom networked smartphone. Always good voice and data network coverage wherever I go (mostly sandton, kempton and pretoria east). I use about 300mb a month.

Facebook seems to consume a lot of data (obviously downloading youtube vids and such will too), so if you dont use FB much your data needs should not be to high.

Presently on Cell C and get to areas where I have very poor coverage quite often. Never had that problem while on Vodacom. Got full HSDPA (3G) in some pretty remote places.

You cannot provide an answer for that question. It's all relative. I am on Cell C, have no reception. My wife is on Vodacom, has no reception. Telkom Mobile, full reception. Who would I suggest on that? Telkom Mobile. Yet the other recommendations would differ.

Best recommendation would be to buy your phone cash and go prepaid, therefore you are not locked in. If you unhappy, you just port.

CellC but try a pre-paid sim in the areas you frequent before you get a contract as some people complain about connectivity... I get 3G everywhere i go and there data is pretty cheap.

I am more frequently, recently experiencing periods where I am unable to make voice calls [ iPHONE 4 S ] - switching the phone off and then on sometimes, but not always fixes this IMO tower related problem, am with Vodacom, am also experiencing network degradation, on my data connection.

Welcome to Africa I guess, where you get charged more and more, for less and even less ... , and everything is going downhill ... , i.e. path of least resistance ...

I think if you are talking about data speed I would vote for Telkom Mobile.... Cheap FAST internet where they have their own coverage....

Other than that all the operators are pretty good in one way or the other.... Yeah that vodacom ad that says best network for smart phones..... HAHAHA fake... I only got EDGE here no streaming possible. I do get 12Mbps with Telkom Mobile though.....

It's very difficult to say, it all depends on your location and the signal relevant to your area, specific to the service provider.

For example- Cell C, despite giving me sporadic HSDPA connectivity at home and at work, is still miles more reliable than Vodacom is in the same areas. Their EDGE alone, is faster than Vodacom on 3G.

So best best- get a few prepaid sims, load up a small data bundle on each, and see which one gives you the best overall experience.

Cell-C FTW!

Nothing beats their 3GB/365-day data bundle for R399.

Where I live, all we have for Internet is MTN (Vodacom dropps calls, CellC has no reception, no Telkom Mobile either.

Your situation will probably be different, Maverick Jester has some good advice there.

Which phone are you considering?

I guess, end of the day, it is the network that has the best coverage in your area, so test and try all ...

I am on Vodacom using an Iphone 4s and streaming radio stations through the car's bluetooth. I do a lot of commuting and the vodacom network has proved absolutely reliable for almost interuption free radio-streaming through the entire South Africa. The 20GB data promotional data bundle for R499 is great value when considering the quality of the network. Previously I had MTN and Cell C, services with which I was not very happy about. Vodacom Data Quality of Network is the same as the networks in Germany. MTN and Cell C is very poors. Telkom Mobile I have no experience about.

Depends. If you have decent reception on all networks in your area then I would say Cell C, otherwise whichever network has good reception in your area :p

+1, but what about RBM 200MBx12 R99 SIM promo??
Can that be loaded that on an existing voice SIM?

If it can, then that is also a good option, although it is not as flexible as the 3GB/365; you are limited to 200MB in one month.
I guess it depends on whether you know what your usage pattern is going to be up front.
