Hi Guys,

we are currently running a pilot project internally to test out a new VoIP provider. Some users have shown interest in using their cell phones with softclients installed rather then physical phones.

The PBX requires that the App support g729.

I have been using zoiper and while it gets the job done it can't seem to keep a connection to the server.
Any recommendations on a working alternative?

You can give Bria from Counterpath a whirl.

We haven't really invested much time in using cell phones with softphones. We prefer DECT or dedicated wifi phones. The main issues for us are:
1) You need tech savvy users: Apps crash, or go offline, behave differently depending on OS version etc. It's fine if your users understand this, but generally management doesn't want to hear about it. When it comes to phones people want it to "just work".
2) Battery life: Addition of a softphone client can severely diminish your battery life. Some smart phone users already struggle to get through the day as it is. Assuming you're using it in the office on Wifi and as a primary phone, that's going to add some extra drain.

Zoiper on Android was rock-solid for me. Was permanently on and worked every time, on wifi or 3G. Haven't found anything that works well on iOS - have Zoiper loaded but only for outgoing calls.

Bria is good (iPhone App Store) BUT only after you PURCHASE the G.729 codec

i ran Zoiper fine as well, only issues i picked up on was battery life as mentioned above. and actual data used was more than i had expected.
