So i moved from my crappy area that doesn't support DSL, to an area that does. And i want to finally install DSL.

Problem is, i don't know what to buy, what to get, what i need and how much the total is, including the hidden costs.

I see afrihost has a prepaid solution for R39 p/m. Its unshaped, but question on that is, is it REALLY only R39??? anything hidden???

Then the telkom line, i want a 4meg line since the prepaid is unshaped.
The 4 meg telkom line costs R413 p/m. Again, the same question, is it REALLY only R413 p/m??? anything hidden???

So would that cost me R452 p/m for the afrihost solution + telkom line? I just want to know what all i am paying for and if i can conclude that that is what i am going to pay.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

You only need to add in the normal telephone line rental of R131.

That R39 from afrihost id probably only for 1gig though.

My setup

isat 4MB line = R371 p.m (24x7 support) www.isat.co.za, if your line goes down you just contact isat & they'll log a call with telkom & get it resolved.
Afrihost 5GB unshaped = R145 p.m (1GB unshaped 24x7 R29 p.m on a month to month basis. the R39 per 1GB allows can carry over to the next month if you don't finish your cap)
Telkom closer = R150 p.m (no installation fee)
Total = R666

afrihost also offer 1GB unshaped data for life from time to time.

Best solution is to stay clear from DSL - just review all the issues with ISP's - many years ago Telkom set the benchmark of poor connectivity, service and high prices and it seems none of the local ISP's after all this time have managed to get their act together.

Cell C seems to be a breath of fresh air, however not sure how long it will llast before they also start to implement a poorly configured CDN, like WA, etc.

I know why you say that, but i need a dsl, or any fast solution.

Will mail koema now, do you know her personally?

I like the option of carrying data over with afrihost.

Thanks staunchy, you broke it down the way i hoped. ima see what openweb has and compare with isat.

Thanks a lot guys

Keoma is a HE.

You never mentioned what your budget is.

Or what you intended usage is. Is it really necessary for 4meg, with 1 gig cap?

R133 (Telkom line)
R413 (ADSL 4 meg)
R546 total.

ISP - 1 gig shaped - Afrihost @ R29 / gig (sometimes have 2 for 1 specials)

OR

R190 for 10 gigs.

i was thinking of that prepaid option, and just wanted to test how it would be with 1 gig at first, then choose to go up to 10 gig, but afrihost has an uncapped that cost 630, according to a friend.

My intended use is...gaming and downloading(a #### lot).

I think afrihost is the best option so far, i just need to do more research then i will get back to this thread

If it is uncapped you are after, you will have to go far to beat OpenWebs Gold Uncapped for R738. Mweb and other ****ty networks cannot compare

er if you want to download a **** lot then first of all DSL is your only choice, and secondly uncapped would be best suited to that. Maybe with a spare unshaped account if you find you need it for gaming, uncapped might work well enough though.

You'll burn through a gig in minutes if you really want to download a lot, even 10Gb is not nearly as much as you think. MWeb's uncapped is probably a better bet than Afrihsot's at the moment. But on Afrihsot you can change between uncapped and prepaid from one month to the next online, so it makes it easy.

Not sure what you mean by this, but you'll pay for your upgrade (line speed) in any case.

Openweb has a special on their Gold accounts att he moment. Seriously the best uncapped service a.t.m. Mweb and Afrihost uncapped, are heavily shaped, so downloading is going to be a nightmare. It alos depends how you download. If it via Torrent, then you going to have to search to find an ISP that doesn't shape torrents to standstill.
