Best 'standard' smartphone?

Hi all

My contract renewal is up in Feb, or cancellation in April, and I'm looking to get a smartphone because they look great.

I'm a real newb when it comes to the functionalities, to be honest, and a lot of what is said on this forum goes flying over my head :o ...

Anyway.
Since I (still) want a smartphone, I'm looking for the best that does not require any changes that can or will affect warranties. In other words (some more :o if I get this wrong), no rootin'tootin flashing business :D . Which is the best, out the box?
Big screen, good photo/video capture capabilities and actual phone-ability are the priorities. I guess there are better (or more viable) non-smartphones for the job, but... I still want a smartphone!

And no, not looking at the iPhone 4 either - Besides internet browsing, playing music/movies etc it'll mainly be used as a phone, which I hear the iPhone isn't the greatest. And I just don't like the look of the phone overall, too.

Aaaaag no man people!! Symbian?? Blackberry OS?? next thing you guys will suggest is a bloody black & white screen!!

Get any one of the newer Android phones they're all awesome... DON'T and i repeat DO NOT get nineteen-foetjek se gemors like a Nokia or BB you'll just feel dissapointed and long for the days of HeMan, BraveStar, Robotek and all that other old kark that will go nicely with your outdated OS

EDIT: O even Windows mobile 7 is worth a look(haven't tried it myself... yet)

I wanted to suggest that at first, but he wants a standard phone. Android is a bit more than standard IMO

Gosh why would someone be interested in buying something thats completely underwelming to them... i guess they are the same people who drive all these vw's everyday.

But its also very easy to use straight out of the box, and a standard user will not have to use the extra functionality. I ♥ my android :D, And I havn't rooted it and its still the best phone I ever had...

Get an android :D

Dont get me wrong on my other post. I own an Android phone as well, and use it to the max!

In that case he shouldn't go for a standard smartphone but a more advanced one :), my vote goes to android then.
 
You never have to get into the rooting/flashing stuff. Look at these phones, the best choice is down to personal preference so don't listen to people who simply tell you one of them is the best:
Samsung Galaxy S
HTC Desire HD
HTC Dezire Z
iPhone 4
Nokia N8
Blackberry Torch (since you want a good screen, this one might not be an option since it has the lowest resolution here).

If those are out of your price range, look at the LG Optimus One.
 
Maybe the price range will assist too, The DHD is a very nice phone, but expensive, the Optimus is a cheaper Android phone, The N* (my preference) is a nice cheaper phone etc...
 
The iPhone is awesome. It doesn't have any issues making calls, from what I've heard on the forums.

The X10 mini is quite nice. Android is just not as cool as iOS in my opinion.
