Interesting to hear people's opinions on what SUV they would consider buying if they were in the market for a new vehicle?

For instance we just did an article about the Land Rover Discovery 3. I was really impressed with this car. We drove in a typical JHB thunderstorm and the car handled remarkably well and really stuck to the road. It's the safest i've ever felt.

ML 63 AMG: Well it's a lot of money but damn it's just beautiful and has every little feature you can think of. We had DVD screens in the headrests. It was awesome.

BMW X6: Looks a little bit weird and i didn't really enjoy driving this. I could barely see out the back window and i just didn't feel in control of the car.

Anyone have any extra information to share?

You talking about the best SUV for actually going offroad in, or the best SUV to be a penile-compensated douchebag in?

Well, the X6 isn't strictly speaking an SUV. It's rather an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), according to the press. You know car-makers are always trying to do the hybrid thing. IMHO, the X6 is a useless waste of money. You get a coupe look on big wheels, that's about it. For a truck-load of money, of course.

Good point! It really is a waste of money!

What are peoples thoughts on the Audi Q7?

A vehicle that performs offroad as well as on urban roads.

Well what do you mean "perform". I've seen 20-year-old Corollas driving around on some of the worst roads you can imagine. Similarly, fully offroad modified Jeeps, Cruisers etc driving around on public roads.

You mean something that handles like a go-kart on road and rips through 4x4 trails offroad?

No i mean something that is smooth and quiet on road and yet when taken offroad it copes just as well.

Surely that would have to be part of the criteria of what defines the car as BEST SUV.

Money, design and fuel economy would also come into play

That's the problem, 99.9% of SUV owners never go offroad. Better just to buy a normal car IMO.

I kinda like the VW Touareg.

Get around the fact that it's a VW, and it's not *too* bad ;) That said, my stepfather loved his Touareg ... until he bought the new X5.

You don't feel from a safety perspective SUV's are more capable of protecting you and your family in a collision?

You can't help but feel safe in a bigger car that is higher off the ground. I have also been witness to an X5 in an accident and the only proof it had been involved in a collision was a slight dent.

I've heard they are very nice but from a design point of view it's not very stylish when compared to the other vehicles in the market.

Most SUVs are actually LESS safe than normal passenger cars.

You've seen the VW Touareg R50 at the JHB Motorshow?

I thought it was pretty stylish. The standard ML and X5 also look slightly dull unless they are the higher end models/added sport kits.

I hadn't seen that actually! It's quite nice! You are right the X5 is slightly dull. The sport kits do make it look a lot sexier.
