You can do if you want. However in this case the whole point of promoting the threads is clearly to drum up votes so that you can win a PS4. Then the winners become the ones with the most desperation and spamminess, not the ones with the best quality. And everyone hates being spammed for votes; it's the bane of my wife's Facebooking. So just in order to discourage that sort of behaviour - and woe betide any who pm me for votes - I'm for judge's decision being final.
You have an reasonable argument, you are correct that competitions are messy when it comes to votes, proper rules, regulations and guidelines must be announced prior the commencement date.
The voting committee is problematic as with this current debacle (the community), but this group must be anonymous and their individual tally must be made known on the winner announcement date. Should the community being utilised, then certain voting mechanisms must be used in combination, like views, contributions, replies etc. not votes, however this needs monitoring, control and throughout management.
In this case, there was no rules against campaigning and I see campaigning as a legitimate tool to gain votes and also thread visibility. Marketing can either make you, or destroy you.
This Forum extends its reach not only to a viewing or participating audience, but also to their advertisers. Quality in concern here... hmmm, then surely the Opel Monza 1991 CoTY thread must be the winner, right?
Then I must agree with you, IMO the personal COLLECTION OF INFORMATION = TYPE OF QUALITY, still this is a competition and my argument in regard with promotion still stands under the competition terms and conditions.
In the end, I participated in only one competition thread:

I made a legitimate participation in where my personal interest draw my attention, prior this debacle, and I made my vote accordingly (with a push).
Like I said, my other option is your thread.
