Hello all!

I am looking into getting a new uncapped deal, I'm currently with SAOL 384 uncapped package that they offered ages ago. Anyways the line has had decent speeds of 42KB/s constantly so I've always stuck with them even though they're a bit more expensive.

Lately though Ive had some slight issues and their support is almost non-existant, and since their pricing is like R150 more I was thinking of switching to a cheaper offering.

Most uncapped deal posts seem to be focusing on 4mbit lines, are there ever any speed limitations to 384 uncapped? Since the speed of the line is fairly low I'd expect there to probably not be.

What is the best offering for 384kbit lines? I see lots of posts saying MWEB is the best uncapped and a lot saying MWEB has tons of issues. I download around 50gb per month currently, almost all my downloads are from megaupload so I'm not really affected too much about p2p limitations.

I'm not the biggest fan of MWEB so would prefer to go with another ISP, I see axxess has some uncapped offerings, is the "just uncapped" offering any good? Or openweb's uncapped?

Thanks

OpenWeb Gold via the Vodacom Business backbone is ideal if you're not too concerned about P2P (torrents) and works perfectly for websites like MegaUpload as well as news servers.

Take a look in the OpenWeb Uncapped Feedback thread and ask for advice there, people who specifically use what you do would be better suited to giving feed back, assuming they don't see this thread :p

I've been with OpenWeb for over a year, originally at 384 Gold via Vodacom Business and now 4MB Gold via Altech. Best support out there (Yay MrBEEP!) and I believe the best consumer uncapped package (Gold) in the country.

I have MWEB, it's pretty good, as long as you don't intend to use services such as Megaupload/torrents, it's all shaped. Runs well (very) late at night, until the early morning.

During the day it's a mixed bag (for the shaped stuff), depending on the network load.

HTTP is perfect, pretty much all the time.

What does Openweb do to torrents?

Mweb is highly overshaped and constantly getting 'tweaked' to save them bandwidth. Useless for games.

Cybersmart unshaped is in fact shaped and getting worse because they are congested (Wazzup is part of this). Support is severly limited.

torrents you need go to IS backbone of gold, which give nice torrent performance, but you sacrifice other performance like skype etc i heard.

altech blocks torrents

vodacom they don't just shape it badly :P

IS is great in the beginning, but usage throttled very early isn't it (it was when I tried it on Axxess). You may as well buy it per gig.

Pretty much on the money.

Altech blocks torrents (read: P2P) and sites like RapidShare and MegaUpload. However, you get full line-speed 24/7, excellent latency and perfect Skype and you're able to stream video (YouTube, video feeds, etc) perfectly.

Vodacom Business shapes torrents heavily (think lower than 10kB/s) but is otherwise perfect depending on some other factors (when I upgraded to a 4MB line it was basically awful whereas for other people it's perfect, I think location had something to do with it). There's also a 24-hour disconnect on this account (i.e. it disconnects and reconnects 24-hours after you've established connection). Really annoying when you've forgotten about it and you're in the middle of an online game.

IS is pretty much "good" for everything. Emphasis on good--it's not great, not perfect, not stellar, just good. I also found that Skype was pretty much ghastly on it--it was permanently stuttered, the quality was fine but the feed was jittery.

These are just my personal experiences :)

Hi Splafda,

We do have a try before you buy 24hr ADSL Uncapped offering. I can have a sales consultant call you and explain further on how it works.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy
