I was wondering if I could get every ones take on who they think is the best Uncapped ISP at the moment.
Im about to sign up for either
  • MWEB
  • Openweb
  • Afrihost
  • Axxis
  • Telkom

I know Afrihost has a 60GB threshold and then they start throttling you
Openweb are shaped 24/7
Axxis hasnt been getting decent speeds.

are there any other pitfalls with the other ISP's I should be aware of? Im kind of partial to the MWEB since every one seems satisfied with the service they are offering.

What ISP do you guys thing is best for the Uncapped (Shaped) market??

1. Mweb.

2. IS Uncapped Basic. (Resold by other ISPs)

3. Afrihost.

Mweb and IS (along with Telkom when they join the party) are the only ones who are big enough to get the right user mix, and to get their network management right. The only reason why Mweb is so much better than IS at this stage is because like good scouts, they were well prepared and have put appropriate and palatable traffic shaping policies in place. Everyone else is out of their depth. Afrihost are resorting to throttling your line speed based on monthly usage, and in my book that is just not acceptable, or even sensible.

my (and others) experience with IS basic is that it's awful for anything other that browsing, just check the threads on openweb/axxess etc

Gatecrasher u say mweb is the best option but they have a 12 month contract to sign.

As far as I know its month to month not 12 months, but you need to give one calender month notice if you want to cancel with them.

Definitely no contract. I signed up with them yesterday and while download speeds are not as fast as they were on my Axxess Express+ account (maxed out at 300kB/s, used to get 440kB on Axxess), general internet use is pleasant. Mweb is definitely good value for money in the South African context.

I'm also back with Mweb. Speeds are good, no contract and it's working well so far.

any torrent speeds with afrihost and openweb pls. afrihost is 1st choice as i am with them at the moment

I have yet to decide...but it seems MWEB is the best choice.

By the end of the long weekend I will probably fax the forms, that I downloaded the day they announced uncapped being available.

You can now sign up online without having to fill in and fax forms. You may have to fax your id though.

Mweb - 4096 offering - as good as it gets.

I'm with Afrihost on a 384 line. Had awesome service/speeds on capped package, but now I have moved to the uncapped, after about 16GB I have been throttled down to almost zero on torrents. I'm very disappointed and now seriously considering moving to another ISP. Pity, Afrihost's service was really good.
