Best university in SA to study technology and engineering

Bursaries are limited and money is tight for many people these days. I dont see the point in people being paid less, purely because they havent attended the "best' university. That is B. S

There are many white, black, coloured and asian people who simply cannot afford tertiary education.

Some people are incredibly ungrateful. These articles really annoy me.

These lists are academic rankings, not "how useful your degree is in the real world" rankings. The graduate starting salary is a better indication IMO.
 
What do they include under technology, apart from engineering? Computer science? I honestly cannot see how UCT can be that much better than the other top tier universities in SA.

Tell that to a little white, black, indian, coloured kid that works hard all their life, is passionate about their future but doesnt attend the "best" university.

Tell that to a lecturer in a "lesser" university who is passionate about educating young minds, believes in their students and wants to make a difference in the world.

Reputation, of course. All may be equal in terms of accreditation, but reputation is earned through results. If the "lesser" university consistently turns out graduates that are passionate and able, then they will eventually be preferred, and if the "best" university turns out graduates that are incapable, or to a lesser extent, they will get lower in these rankings.

Unfortunately, as you may have realized, life is not fair. You play with the hand you were dealt and make the best of it. After a couple of years of work experience where you studied is not as important any more in any event. Then they look at the kinds of companies you worked for, and judge you based on that and your interview ability.

Yea i do agree with life not being fair. I dont come from a privileged background, so I can relate. I have attended 1 of the inferior/lesser universities and have encountered many people who work damn hard. There is passion and hope in poverty stricken individuals. I dont believe that the "lesser" universities should be tainted or stereotyped. Some people dont have many options in life.
 
I would not put too much faith in the QS World Rankings. The weighting of their ranking I think is not so objective, the Shanghai ranking I think is better. On that note That article you shared says nothing at all , it just summarises the QS World Ranking.

I was expecting an article that contrasts the courses offered at each of the 20+ Universities, where they overlap where they do not. What research they are undertaking in each department and so on.
 
These rankings are often based more on the literature and research a university puts out throughout the year therefore these are probably better indications of what the staff at the institution are focusing on versus their ability to lecture and the quality of education the students are receiving. UCT for example is far more focused on research and putting out papers than most other universities in the country. In terms of where to study a degree in I.T or engineering right now, for engineering I would say Stellies, the way their engineering programs are designed surpasses that of most South African institutions. I.T I would say TUKS (University of Pretoria) due to the fact that their current I.T faculty staff are some of the best in the country (including the only A-rated Computer Scientist in South Africa) and their course structure is great (if not slightly ridiculous :D )

Yeah. The rankings definitely tend to make more sense for postgrad students and postdocs because of this.

I hear your frustration. Look at it this way: On average it is better to go to a university with a better reputation. It might be easier for you to get your first job with a degree from UCT than, say, Limpopo. However, after that it is all up to you. For the same qualification the top 10% of the Limpopo graduates will outperform the bottom 10% (or more) of UCT graduates over their careers.
If you think about it, students from all over the world can complain that they do not get the same opportunities as the MIT graduates. It is what you make with the opportunities and talents you have that matters.
