Hi all,

What ADSL router would you recommend at the moment ? I'm looking at the Billion 7300 or 7300G or a Linksys. I'm not sure of the 7300's can do port forwarding. I would really prefer one that can be a VPN server too but they are all a bit too pricey for me at this stage.

Regards

As far as I know, all new routers can do port forwarding.

Billion is great btw ;)

Have a look at the Billion 7402G. We have one in our office running a VPN connection and it works like a dream. They retail for about R1200.

If you can get Telkom's latest offering, the Zyxel IAD P2602 free then this is also an option. This router can also do Voip. There were some rumblings about the free router being offered again over Christmas. Pm photonman if you want to know more about this. Usually Telkom runs several specials towards the end of November ...

I have a D-link DSL-2640U Wireless ADSL Router + Modem + Switch (about R850), I can't say I haven't had problems with it, but it's due to it being my first encounter with a router rather than there being anything wrong with it.

It's range seems pretty good too, even a PC in the back room outside the house gets a signal to use the internet.

I'm using a Billion 7300.
Great value for money @ R500 - R600 and yes they do port forwarding (Virtual Server).
The 7300 will allow VPN pass through but if you want a model that actually handles the VPN itself you'll need the 7402R2, 7402G or 7404VGO which will cost more.

From a personal point of view I love the Billion Routers (I use one personally) from a business point of view buy one they are great value for money :)

Also using a Billion 7300G router here. No problems. Great product. Bought it last year for around R750 not sure how much they cost now.

They definitely can port forward. The other thing that I would mention is that a user on this forum is involved with Billion support so makes getting help easier.

If you are looking for cheap routers take a look at these links - R350 is the cheapest that I know of. These are new products. The first two do not include an ADSL modem. The last one which is based on a Broadcom chipset does. The Broadcom based routers are considered to be some of the best available. Just look on Google for more information about those models and the Broadcom chipset etc.
