We have a client in a remote area where the lines keep on getting stolen. The only connection that is available is 3G & HSDPA. Signal and speed is great, we are currently running Elastix with 4 channel sip trunk and G729 codec. The quality is ok but sometimes calls can break up a little or they are dropped. Any advice as to what Codec would be best use over mobile data connections?

I would give iLBC a try, it is more resilient to Packet Loss and also the call quality is slightly higher than G729.
Also keep you local phones on G711 (alaw) only set the Trunk to iLBC.

I've heard good things about iLBC and am eager to test it. Unfortunately little providers support it yet. Other than iLBC, G729 is still the way to go. If your provider supports iLBC, let us know how it's working for you.

Maybe look at a provided that supports IAX2 , its the same bandwidth consumption as G729 but 2nd, 3rd,4th calls give significant savings . This will then make you more resilient to bandwidth starvation and give you overall better quality.
