The quality of designer is directly proportional to the amount of money you're prepared to spend. Good design doesn't come cheap.

Not necessarily. Some designers do go out of their way with their work, even when it's cheap :)

How much will something like the mybroadband site cost? +/-?

It really depends on functionality. You see the front end of MyBroadband. What you don't see is the backend where the editor sits and writes his article, how the content is managed in the backend and which other functions there are.

If I had to design something like the MyBroadband site, the starting price would be no less than 10K.

Why is that?

Because, at the time Thor187 posted that, their website was completely down - hacked. Did you read the thread? Point of the matter is that WordPress, when used with an array of almost-pointless plugins, is a security nightmare. Developers should be very careful when using it. My wild guess is that 98% of all WP hacks were due to bad code from plugins or themes.

While you're focusing on the website, don't forget you need professional content as well. It's something that way too many people overlook ... the most awesome responsive design is wasted money if your basic message has typos and/or is boring.

There's nothing worse than web developers who suddenly start taking a crack at writing content for websites ... especially the sorts of content that most clients don't see during approval, and instead your clients end up discovering all the nasty typos in those 'hidden messages' (like a custom 404 'page does not exist' or 'thank for sendding us your mesage' on the contact form).

I prefer not to self-promote, but we do the websites every so often. We focus primarily on integration and MIS / dashboarding, but we've delved into the odd administration system and website. Link is in my signature, but it hasn't been updated in a couple of months...

Why 10k? Just install vbulletin and add a bunch of ads?

Vbulletin remains the intellectual property of Vbulletin. You may use the software, you do not own it. Vbulletin however is forum software and would not be 10K. A Bit cheaper. The poster referred to the main news site. That is not Vbulletin, it is a custom content management system. Developing those don't come cheap :)

Certainly never vBulletin; such an old design that has been changed in more than a decade. Discourse is the more popular option, plus it's opensource.

Facetious comment based on the example given of MyBroadband which is basically a default install of vB 5...

Like vbulletin, its markdown support is awful
No argument there.

But does the layman use markdown?
