Hi all

I am returning to SA after 5 years in the UK, so basically it's a new start for me, job hunting, hunting for a place to live etc. For the forseeable future I will be using a laptop for all internet surfing etc.

I wanted to get a few people's opinions on the wireless products out there and advice on what not to get. As I see it, I will be moving around a bit (staying with folks, family, friends etc), so a fixed line solution does'nt seem ideal, unless I can move it to a new location without much hassle (but I presume this is too much to expect).

I won't be doing any downloading or gaming at all. It's just for Skype / MSN / job hunting and email. Seeing as I don't have a job yet, I am looking for the most efficient product from a cost point of view, until such time that I am financially stable, after which I can go looking for the daddy of all internet solutions lol...

What would you guys advise for someone in my situation?

Regards

Just look in the Vodacomm and MTN sections for data package comments, as you will need a cell phone anyway, then whichever provider blows your hair back :p

not sure wich cellphone u have atm, cheapest would be. When u get to SA get a simcard and add a data bundle for your Cellphone. Vodacom has 500mb for R189, 1gig for R289 and 2gig for R389. (bundles are month to month and work on prepaid too).

U basically surf on your laptop still, using your cellphone as a modem. If your phone cannot do that. U'll need to buy a GPRS/3g/HSDPA USB modem.

Not sure on how good the SKyping will be on 3g though. But for emails surfing the net and a odd download here and there.. it should be fine. It will depend on wich area your at, at that modem (signal strength and signal quality to and from the closest tower)

Yeah, probably using your phone as a modem with a data bundle would work out to the best for your situation.

Also if you are going to be bringing your phone over here to SA make sure your phone isnt network locked or contact your servcie provider and ask them to unlock it.

Most of them charge for this to be done AFAIK.
