Better maths and science marks for 2017 matrics

Oh thank goodness for that. South Africa is saved. Soon universities will be churning out scientists and engineers and Nobel prizes are a certainty

Do we have a Nobel laureate in pure or applied sciences?

Yes. Cormack (medicine) for the invention of CT, Klug: chemistry, Brenner: medicine...etc.

How much effort from South African institutions contributed to these peoples awesome work?..

Its the same as calling Elon Musk a South African success story.

Musk left SA when still at school. These guys did their undergrad in SA and left for better research opportunities. Not quite the same thing.

Granted, but I was looking for those who received the honour working within our borders.

That would be difficult. As it would be in, say, Australia and NZ. The budgets for fundamental research are very limited in those countries and the creme de la creme chase the money.

Please remember that the required pass rate is a miserable 30%.
And this report coming from the Sunday Times means nothing.
Unless we can have a look into the actual marks obtained this remains a propaganda piece.
Sound like Zuma yesterday saying the economy is improving.
Lol

Very true.

Not paying attention to this. This is nothing but propaganda to the masses, unfortunately.

FTFY.

Snarky remark aside, even with that low 30% hurdle to clear, last year the marks required "adjustment" - what this means is, too many people still failed, and they had to grade the exams differently. This means that top students who got in high 90s might even have ended up being awarded 105% for maths, for example.

The fact that they didn't need adjustment to clear the low hurdle this time is progress. Not at the level you want it yet, but it is progress.

If the same level as last year was required. How do we know the papers were not easier??
