Beware bullying IT vendors

People in SMEs need to be beyond stupid to allow any IT solution vendor to dictate to them in the first place. Actually, I have a problem with the word "dictate". In the good times, some IT vendors (who shall be nameless) simply ripped off SME's. They didn't exactly have to go knocking on doors looking for small business. In my experience I'd have to drag many of them out of bed and when I did, I found that dealing with Telkom direct (as distasteful as it may be) was often way cheaper for my own SME solutions and the IT solution company grabbed its own overblown proposal and scurried away like a rat to a dark hole.

Pastel

Hmmm, Cohen from Softline Pastel, I personally do not know any other company that tries to push the SMME into taking a yearly "support" contract and then give no support.

Pastel is border-lining next to Telkom. I am amused that the reporter utilised them, and so I render this article absolutely useless.

Just recently had that experience here at work, I was roped in because I do the IT here

"It's arrogant and disrespectful for IT vendors to expect customers to skill up to use their offerings."

this is a hoot... we write point of sale software and all our clients bitch about having to get to know pastel.

"That's why I always advise SMEs to make the vendor do the work. Get what you want, not what the vendor wants you to have."

Does this mean we can start flooding pastel with software requests and they're going to write it?

what a bunch of self important prats... I think they're feeling the pinch because quickbooks is starting to take a large portion of their market away

I absolutely agree with most of the views expressed in this article. I do have a concern that most SME companies do not have the skill or knowledge to dictate what would be best for their environment. In some cases these companies opt for the less complex easy solutions that is provided by equally less skilled service providers and turn out to be not a good fit and unable to grow with the company.

I do agree easy to implement and proven solutions but it must be a very very good fit if you chose a shelf product. Heavy customisation proved less successful in the last few years.
