Beware faking your CV

High unemployment may tempt job seekers to embellish their CVs, but the increasing use of technology to double check the facts should make them think twice, a recruitment company said on Tuesday.

Lie on your CV and when caught, blame them for modifying it.

Well, they could do rough checks on whether or not you did work somewhere (or something along those lines) by looking at what you're posting on those sites (updates, photo's, etc.).

It's not illegal, no, seeing as that stuff is publicly available for everyone. They aren't hacking your account, they're looking at what you're publicly posting - something that a lot of people seem to forget about. Once something goes on Facebook/Twitter/<social_networking_site/> then it is in the domain of the Interblags and will stay there forever for all to see.

Difficult to prove though. If I was a business and looked at your FB profile, I'd never admit to it.

If your LinkedIn profile shows a a gap in employment while your CV doesn't that could be an issue.

The data gathering is of data that's publicly available, so not illegal.

Trick is to set your privacy settings to max. My Facebook is as tight as possible. Can't even find me in search The weakness is your activity on other people's accounts.

LinkedIn should only have info you want prospective employers to have, don't see any issues there.

Yeah ... nothing like calling you a liar about having a Masters Degree from University X .. when upon phoning their switchboard you are told to hold on *wait 10mins* transferred to the wrong department. Then told that no such person exists on their computer systems (that's if you lucky enough to find someone competent enough to research), or your name shows up only due to a computer malfunction you no longer have a Masters Degree in Computer Engineering but are busy completing a Undergrad Degree in Accounting and still need to make up two modules. :wtf: Or better yet the person doing the reference checking gets the phone put down in their ear.

So I guess its important now to please synchronize all online profiles and social nets with the same qualification

The use of technology doesn't count for squat when "this person does not exist" applies

What should be EXPOSED is the following which has happened to two friends of mine in the last 2 weeks.
Recruitment Agency Post job - R 20K - R 25K.
Friends apply (Two different jobs).
First friend get a good review and is offered R 12k, then asked would that be ok?
Second friend was offered 8k because that is what he was currently making?
I was dumbfounded.!
What kind of false advertising scam is this?

did the recruitment agency say it was Cost to Company? That catches alot of guys out where I work, by the time you start working for us, with all the companies and your deductions incl tax you get out about 60%. But the employer could also take a chance though.
