Beware of Sansui!

Hi forumites

I had the lcd tv shopping nightmare:sick: this weekend when buying myself a new lcd tv[applause please].
On Saturday I saw the special at Hi-Fi Corp with the Sansui 32 inch lcd tv.
The only reason I wanted that one was because of that "incredible 5 year warranty".

Before this little outing I did my own research and found Samsung and Philips on the top 5 32 inch lcd list.

On viewing the tv's I found the Philips and Sansui the best looking display ,
however the Samsung simply didn't look as good but the casing looked very impressive and it was a brand new model!


I Googled the Philips model to discover it was an older model hence the cheap price so no ways would I purchase last year's technology:sick:

My mind was made up on Sansui, my financial limit was R6000[and no more!] and I personally enjoyed that brand.

The sales lady also recommended the Sansui to me and said it sells quicker then the others."We have no comebacks on Sansui."
She also said Samsung don't make good tv's[nonsense],but I didnt think the tv was that hot anyways.

With this in mind I asked her about the other models too as they were the same price[Samsung,Philips,Wharfdale,Hi-sense and Telefunken].
As brand aware as I am I took the Sansui as I owned many of the old crt tv's and never had a problem.

When I got home I eagerly unwrapped and installed the tv stand, powered it up and found a dead pixel!
Knowing its almost normal I forgave the tv for its sins and plugged in the composite cables for dstv.
No sound!Plugged in the ol xbox360 into the other ports and once again no audio!
All I heard was a distant whine of a voice.
Thinking im an idiot I fiddle all night thinking there is a setting i'm not activating.
I went on to the SA Sansui website only for Google to inform me that this website is malicious and could harm my pc!
Definately something wrong as the wording was all buggy and quickly logged off!
The next day I wrap it up and go back to Hi-Fi corp in the storm we had in Cape Town this weekend!
Without batting an eyelid the good technician takes my word for it and gives me another Sansui.

I get home thinking the last model must have been the black sheep and unravel the next one to discover 5 DEAD PIXELS AND 6 DEAD DSUB PIXELS!
Knowing the policy of nearly all lcd manufacturers I head back down to Hi-Fi corp 10 mins before closing time and into the returns department.
The technician gave me one look and said "We will give you a model upgrade"
They called another branch to source me a new Philips model but it wasn't to be...
I took the Samsung and tested it there and to my amazement were no dead pixels!
Granted it only had a 1 year warranty and the picture wasn't as crisp as the others [IN SD MODE] it was a brand many trust and they sold me over with it's quality build
and design.
I really wanted the newer Philips but am very happy with this tv.
When you boot an Xbox and see the picture in HD my worries over picture performance vanished forever!

Please don't be fooled by sales people.

Trust your research and avoid a huge mistake![Check those dead pixels!]

Must say that I found the new Tokai Hi-fi corp service department very good and Angelo :omust be commended for his quick and efficient service.
He knows which tv's are lemons!:sick:
 
We have a 40inch Sansui LCD... We havent had any problems... Also bought from HifI and its only HD Ready (Bought it last year) The built-in speakers arent great but we have a surround sound system plugged into it... nothing like watching rugby on that baby ;)
 
O ofcourse a 42 inch ;) or 2349038249023 inch... But anyways... Sometimes you have bad luck... But I also see Sansui as a cheaper brand...
 
I think the hifi corp sales people get more commission for selling Sansui and Wharfdale merch. So they always recommend those brands no matter what.
 
Funny i never thought of Sansui as a cheap brand.
Considering the price it deserves respect.
Although 2 models in row with faults cannot be taken lightly.
And the salesmens refusal to give me a third one paints another picture.
 
As an ex furniture sales guy I can say that there are always cash incentives to the sales people to sell in house brands - as much as 10 times the normal commissions. You will never find a unbiased sales person who will give you the brand you want over the brand they want to sell you.

Been their, done that.
 
We've had a few Sunsui models. We had a TV (5yr warranty), gave in after 5yrs 2 months. Busted solid. Sansui hifi, 6 months. Sunsui dvd-player, well it works but is utterly useless.
 
I try not to deal with HiFi Corp any more. Sansui is the worst brand I have every had the unfortunate experience of using. A long time ago we got a Sansui VHS machine as a gift. Had to take it back twice before we got a working one. We also bought a Sansui DVD player which was eventually swapped out for a Sony after having swapped it out 3 times with another Sansui because of various problems. One time they even tried to guide us through on the phone how to "hack" it to fix the playing of local DVD's as it was stuck on US DVD's.

HiFi never have stock of other brands (Wharfdale and Diamond aside) and only put them on special with a couple of items in stock. Then when the people come in to get the "XXXX", the sales staff give them the spiel on the Sansui because they get a much bigger commission. I still cannot see why people will spend 5K - 10K of their hard earned cash on a crappy Sansui when for 10% more, you can get a quality product.

For everyone out there:

Don't buy a Sansui!

It's really unfair. The sales people talk the biggest load of s..t. They never fail, 5 year ..., etc. I have learnt now to do what you did, swap it out for another brand. You got a good TV in the Samsung. We have been selling Samsung monitors as far back as I can remember (I have 2 Samsung LCD's sitting on my desk and my daughter has a Samsung CRT) and they are really good. I can't see why their TV's will be any different. If I get an LCD TV it will be in this order Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Phillips.
 
Sansui is crap... it's some watered down Chinese junk. The original Japanese Sansui went bust many years ago

Also had the Sansui problem from HiFi Corp a couple of years back! VHS gave many problems, return drama etc. Buy quality people, (its actually cheaper)
 
Sounds like the second Sansui you got was a returned item. Obviously returned because of the dead pixels.
 
Sansui dvd player over here, had problems since day 1 :/ Tiny speck of dust and it wont read
Didnt bother returning it too much of a mission
 
There hasn't been an original Sansui product in HiFI Corp for years, no actually there has never been an original Sansui at Hifi. Same goes with Wharfedale, their not the tried and tested Wharfedale that is revered and looked at in the same light at NAD/ Heffler/ B&W/ Jamo/Onkyo and many others who make the mid-high to very high end units...

The stuff at Hi-Fi is knock-offs.
You'll know its a real Wharfedale DVD player if you get it from Good Guys etc... The R9,000+ price tag may help you recognize the real from the R399 knock off.
 
i wouldnt really blame sansui but hifi corp it does not matter what brand you buy it seems everything from there gives problems be it sansui lg philips sony i'm a technician and i do alot of repairs on tvs and audio equipment normally when a client asks me what tv to buy (cheap option) i always recommend sansui easier to repair also very reliable compared compared to the other chinese brands
 
Sansui must keep you real busy,what with all those broken appliances.
Look at statistics on hello peter:
Sansui:74 complaints,around 40 are the tv's alone!
Samsung:7 of which 3 are tv issues.
LG:6
SONY!:1
SONIC:Lots!
SINOTECH:also alot!
We have to also consider the size of the major companies.If any of the top brands had 20 i would then start to worry.
Sansui is unforgivable!!!!! 74 Complaints!
 
when i started reading, i saw hifi corp - and already thought uh-oh

and i think i only see sansui at them, so double uh-oh, imo
