Beware online pirates, Microsoft warns consumers

Seriously? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know whether something is fake or genuine.
I know there are unsuspecting members of the public out there, but that figure has to be a really small portion of the installed base of unlicensed software.
By far the large majority of unlicensed software is installed with the user's knowledge because he simply cannot afford to pay exorbitant prices.
Microsoft should make Windows 7 starter edition and Office 2010 starter edition more widely available because those are excellent stop gap products that are reasonably priced and very often meet the basic needs of lower end users.

bidorbuy, like other similar sites, serves mainly as a platform for people to sell their warez but that does not mean we condone, encourage or tolerate the listing of counterfeit software,” he said.

fixed :D

Or just do what apple does and sell your OS for R208.

Sometimes even legit users can get hurt too :/, i lost R5400 last year and the person in question just had bad luck which inturn was my badluck.

IMO, always check with users who have purchased from a buyer and never trust those zero rating sellers.

so what did we learn ... use linux or pirate your MS stuff ... :D

Reynolds said that counterfeit products don’t work as advertised and unsuspecting consumers are at risk of downloading or buying non-genuine software that can expose them to spyware, malware and viruses that can lead to identity theft, loss of data, and system failures.

Always my favorite line. Reminds me of the 'will delete your facebook' thing haha.

well why do they pirate ms products?

One of the worst things you can do is purchase a MS OS off the shelf with out service packs and updates.

One of the best things you can do is download an ISO of a MS OS with all the updates and service packs included and restrictions disabled.

An honest person can still purchase a licence from MS

VMware is king

I think MS will die a slow death and VMware will take over and rule the world.

“Criminal syndicates are therefore directly profiting from the sale of counterfeit software and consumers should be aware those proceeds are often fed back into crimes like drug running, money laundering and other nefarious crimes,”

And if you buy from M$ those proceeds are fed back into making S.H.I.T software and extending their monopoly.
Its a lose-lose situation

sounds like an advert for bidorbuy--as Gary said, piracy through intentional means is more rife than through ignorance. besides piracy may be good for MS because they attract more users.

Piracy Shmiracy! Microsoft is a business they should just suck it up, deal with it & stop whining in my ears .. after all when last have I complained to them about how slow and expensive my internet in ZA is?

I am going to take a different approach here... why don't microsoft look at moving windows into the "software as a service" business. Make a copy of Windows 7 only say R150 and it comes with 3 months of updates. Then if you want updates and security essentials etc updated and you want everything to keep running smoothly they charge R120 per year for Update licensing etc. This makes a lot more sense for home users and stops them from ramming another version of windows down our throats every 3-4 years.

Could work. And they could check the license everytime.
But hackers would always get a way around it.

It is a cat and mouse game.
