Beware WASP sign-ups when using LTE routers

A MyBroadband reader recently reported a WASP problem on MTN’s network, where he was signed up to a content service without his permission.

The MTN customer has a 30GB contract and uses his SIM card exclusively in a portable LTE router.

The SMS log and data balance of the SIM can be viewed and interacted with through a companion app on a smartphone or desktop.

For the first time ever I am getting sign up attempts for WASPS, I don't know why. Very irritating. For now I am just sending the unsubscribe SMS daily in case.

The exact same thing happened to me for the exact same service. I am 100% sure I did not sign up for MTN Gamer+ and luckily saw both messages arrive on that day. I had to phone and remove myself from the service.

I definitely believe this is MTN up to no good.

This happened to me long ago when I had the MTN uncapped package. I kept on cancelling the wasp but they kept on coming. Every month different ones. Open contracts are easy targets.

Because they are in cahoots with the networks to make money. It is a scam and the networks happily allow it. Shame on them.
Wrong - they are not in cahoots...
It's even worse - the WASP is the network!
Y’ello. Thank you for subscribing to MTN Gamer+ MoFun at R3.03/day

Indeed, they are now the ones stealing directly, not just on behalf of a third party anymore. I wonder if they check their own WASP services as vigorously as they claim to check others.

I got the same. And I didn't sign up for it either. How do I stop it?

I get somebody who signs me up for about four or five random wasp services every month. They all go through and activate immediately with no opt-in effort on my part, and I have to use the Vodacom "STOP ALL" SMS number to cancel them. I regard anybody who works for this bunch of criminals as complicit in their blantant theft of people's money.

BS from MTN. It's their own services they keep on subscribing automatically. It's easy to fake logs to say opt-in took place when it doesn't exactly show what communication took place. One more reason not to keep a balance in a data sim, oh wait contracts...
