Call me a conspiracy theorist, but could it be possible these attacks are being engineered by M$ to get people to leave one the most popular OS for 7? So this is more about making money than being the saviour of the day.

To elaborate, support for Windows XP service pack 1 and 2 stops on 13 July. However, support/security updates for Windows XP SP3 will continue until 8 April 2014.
(Windows XP is still the most widely used OS: 62.43% - June 2010)

I disable updates on my XP. I've never updated it. My parents still use XP and what they do is at their discretion and they both have SP3 so I'm not worried.
