Lol wtf. How about proper policing first. Catch these phuckers, beat them until they learn their lesson and then set them free again. Repeat if necessary.

Unfortunately that's not allowed, a thief was caught stealing grapes on the farm here last week, when caught, he slipped over his own feet quite a few times and hurt himself. First thing the clumsy idiot does when the police comes is to lay a charge of assault against the security guards. Still waiting to hear what's going to happen now.

Your bridge has little in the way of support. Will the catch fence also have to support the weight of the bridge structure? Your idea has merit. But I suspect only Murray and Roberts will build it per that design. Good idea though.

The folks over at MSPaint Engineers Pty (Ltd) have updated their proposal.

So these numbnuts are planning on putting up steel cages on all bridges since some of these rocks have been thrown off normal vehicle bridges and not just pedestrian bridges.
Worked perfectly in Cape Town.

rietrot expects police to sit on bridges all day and night and not have them attending to his request for assistance

Yep, instead of doing Real Police Work(TM) like prowling the streets, looking for rapists and murderers.

That is victim blaming and sexist.

Womyn are strong and independent and don't need no man to stop them from getting raped.

The catch fences are to the sides, i.e. on the left/right as you drive on the bridge, so the bridge will be supporting them, not the other way around.

Ones in Cape Town seem to be doing just fine.

And the ones across the N2 on the KZN South Coast too, saw about at least two bridges with extended steel cages on them when I went down the coast on Saturday.

The catch fence would have to be rather wide, it's easy to hurl half a brick 5m or more.

I don't see anything wrong with that. It's not a cage that people will be locked into.

I'm not against it. In fact, a lockable cage is more appropriate for these lot

That's about what we have on the bridges crossing the R300. Probably installed under the guise of pedestrian safety.
