I am planning to buy a new car and looked at the new Kia Rio sedan on Saturday and I fell in love with it. I am looking at the normal 1.4l engine model(not the tec) but my boyfriend feels I should buy a car with a bigger engine but less features to make it fit within my budget. Does anyone have experience with the 1.4l engine? how does it perform on the highway/long distance?

I also had a look at the Hyundai i20, but the Rio had a nicer feel to it.

I don't feel the need for a bigger engine than 1.4 but he also has to drive with the car, so he does have a say aswell. We are going to test drive the car tomorrow

I think the 1.4 will be just fine for you. It has a lot more power than older gen 1.4 engines, so it will be nice to drive on the highway. So you like the sedan more than the hatch?

I personally prefer the hatch, looks a bit more "sportier" to me

Who's paying for it?? LOL!!! That should make the decision pretty simple..

Seriously tho, the 1.4 should be fine but give the other model a test as well and see which you like best. If they both fit within your budget then you can make a choice..but having the extra features and specs are nice too.

Initally I wanted a hatch, but the sedan has a HUGE boot. And I will have to wait a few months for the hatch. The dealer just called me to say they only have a tec model available immediately, so I may have to stretch my budget a bit.

The specs say that the tec has an auto aircon. Is that the same as climate control?

I would personally opt for more features, that said it depends on what those features are!

With the price of petrol these days, the smaller engine makes more sense.

Climate control in a 1.4? HANDBRAKE!!!! Look to be serious boys will be boys and bigger is better. Like some aussies say: you only buy milk and soft drinks in 2L. BUT Buy what suits YOU. If you are happy to drive at the speed limmit all the time and are a cautious driver and feel comfy with the 1.4 then buy it.

Take the Rio, and take the tec.

Comfort is awesome. Also I test drove that 1.4 and it definitely felt like it had more than enough power.

I also think the Hatch looks sexier.

I would also go for more features than a bigger engine. However, please bear in mind that you don't get anything for the extras when you sell the car. So if you spend R10K on an extra now, you don't recoup that later on.

depends on how much bigger the bigger engine is, wheras i feel in some cases a 1.6 is more efficient in terms of fuel due to the power to weight ratio , but that too would depend on driver style, as for your accesories what would one like and actually use

I think the Rio sedan (TEC) looks freaking awesome. Go for it. Its a modern 1.4 so it shouldnt be seen in the same light as the old slow 1.4 engines put in VW's etc.

What are your driving habits, daily commutes, distances etc? In other words what must the car do for you?

Thank you for everyone's feedback. I live in Centurion and drive to Sandton each day. My boyfriend and I drive together to work everyday, so it would probably come down to use my car one week, and his the next week. we do some long distance travelling because his parents live in Vryburg, so I definitely want a car that is comfortable and spacious on long distance drives.

My boyfriend likes to speed, but I am a bit more cautious than him. What I need is a car that will pass other cars without sounding like its engine is about to explode

The finance for the tec just got approved, so if I like it on the test drive tomorrow, I can take it immediately. I think my mind has been made up, screw the boyfriend :p
