Big FTTH price cuts: Telkom vs MWEB

I think it's important to note that MWEB is 50Gb + 50Gb, while Telkom is 50Gb plus unlimited night time data.

Also, Telkom gives free installation on the 50Gb package in this scenario while MWEB charges 1710. Telkom's first 3 months are discounted by 50%.

Last month had used around 150GB night surfer data, so in total I had used 200GB. This makes a huge difference.
 
I don't care as much about the data prices. Reduce the crazy line rentals damnit!
 
Hmm - 50 GB at 20 megabits/sec translates to a continuous download of just over 7 hours. That's how long it would take you to exhaust the cap. Pathetic. I can't see the point. It's like having a F1 racing car and trying to drive it from CT to Joburg. You run out of petrol at Worcester. Then you wait a month for the next burst of fuel.

Not that I agree with capped products, but what on earth does the line speed have to do with the amount of data you use.

Using your bad analogy, if you use 200l of petrol a month, and then get a much faster car (with the same fuel consumption) you would get exactly the same distance as previously. You would just get there faster.

And no, you don't suddenly start watching more netflix because you now have 20Mb instead of 10Mb.

Exactly. Also MWEB is Midnight to 6am and Telkom is Midnight to 7am.

Also goes to show how Web Africa's marketing works. They offer 90GB data + 360GB "after hours" data. But if you do the math you can only really download 360GB "after hours" in a month.

So Telkom wins here as well with 100GB and "unlimited i.e. +/- 360GB" after hours.

Your petrol analogy is bad because it's accepted that your usage increases substantially with FTTH, and I have confirmed this anecdotally with every person I know that has it - suddenly youtube defaults to HD, Netflix wlll also send higher def streams by default and so on. The modern web's pretty good at serving adaptive media.

Yes, you can go and change these defaults, but then it's hardly worth upgrading if the first thing you do is make sure all your stuff is as low quality as your ADSL allowed.
 
I don't see anything that was slashed. These still cost about as much as the average. Mybb maths again?

It's an average reduction of 14.65%. I haven't taken their new packages into account as there's nothing to compare it to but either way it's not what is called "slashed" and is still in line with average ftth pricing. But as I said this is mybb maths with a history of inflated headlines like "slashed" and "price war" for standard reductions.
