Big Mac Strikes Back

In fact, Sony’s hot new handheld gaming console, the PlayStation Personal, is already seen by some analysts as a rival to the iPod because, besides games, it also plays movies and music.
don't they mean the playstation PORTABLE?

PSP wont rival the IPOD, it's all about the space, and Sony is hell bent on overcharging for their small Pro Duo cards .....

My impression is that both Jobs and Mac zealots like it being an elitist, niche market. That way they can look down on the poor peasants who only have PCs.

there are grey imports of the product

Hardly surprising when the official agents were charging nearly double the US price. Same for the PowerMacs and PowerBooks.

When it comes to their computers they're still a lot more expensive than a PC though.

has a history of coming up with innovative devices such as the Walkman

I don't think Sony actually invented it.

when Apple’s Macintosh computers captured the imagination

It may have captured the imagination, but it did not do as well as expected.

I don't see Sony's entertainment arm necessarily giving Sony's hardware arm much of an advantage - it is only one entertainment company and they're hardly co-operative with the hardware division.

later released the affordable iMac computer

It wasn't affordable and was in fact a horrible computer. I hated it and even my friends who are real Mac fanatics hated it. It did look cool though.

For one, it means that consumers might be able to install Windows software on Macs for the first time.

The reverse. No matter what Apple does OSX is going to get cracked and installed on non-Apple hardware. Sooner or later they will probably have to give in and make a general release. Currently Apple is a hardware company that uses their OS as bait to sell expensive hardware. Time will tell if they can keep that up now that it can potentially run on any PC.

I think Apple's primary reason for adopting Intel processors was laptops. The PowerPC is powerful processor, but it runs very hot. Their laptops have been languishing in the dark ages because they simply couldn't put anything better into them.
