Big problems at Eskom

Eskom’s latest system status report has shown that there is a high likelihood of load-shedding for the next three months with severe electricity shortages expected.

As part of its system status report, Eskom published its maintenance plan and the “planned risk level” of outages.

“Power cuts will cripple South Africa’s post COVID-19 economic recovery. Load-shedding cannot be the new norm,” he said.

Sadly, it already is. When I see that loadshedding is scheduled now, I just shrug my shoulders, make sure my tablet is charged and move on with life.

I would normally use my inverter for one of the schedules then switch to generator for the next. But unfortunately now I've just got to make sure I've got fuel :-( will need to service my bigger generator as it's hit it's 20 hours.

So Zuma's tenure accounts for 120 days of load shedding yet his minions at the state capture commission would have us believe it was they who "defeated" load shedding? Also they plan for about 20 units on unplanned maintenance for 3 months (assuming 600MW per unit average as most of their stations are at that capacity)? That's crazy.

Not all stations are at that capacity, Camden, Grootvlei, Hendrinia, Komati and Arnot are under 400Mw a unit.

I suspect we'll "coincidentally" see stage 4 loadshedding as soon the vaccine rollout officially starts

My thought for the day:

More and more people are moving into complexes due to crime, economics etc.
As battery prices keep dropping (I'm looking at you Lithium), many will be investing into larger-scale battery backup to offset usage during loadshedding times but they can't go full solar/off-grid (that's literally me at this stage and everyone complex dweller/friend I know is considering doing the same)... as time goes by we're simply offsetting normal usage and compressing it into smaller timescales as people and businesses adapt.

Thus, as time goes by the grid is going to k@k itself each time suburban areas in big cities are switched on again, we're already seeing this in our area, you simply never know if the grid is coming back on when loadshedding ends and I suspect it has something to do with the state of the infrastructure combined with loads of energy being dumped into batteries when the grid comes online.
Just the other day we had 16 hours due to a 4-hour switch-over k@kking itself 1 minute into being turned back on.

Expect things to get way worse in the coming years.

there is more unplanned maintenance than planned.
They should just remove the planned maintenance as that does not seem to be doing anything as they having apparently been doing this maintenance for years but yet we still find more unplanned maintenance.
