Just to add to this - it depends on your market as well, home users are notorius for piracy since they don't consider it to be commercial use and therefore don't think paying is an option.

Business on the other hand tend to think twice about hanging onto pirate software in the office... so those that use downloaded serials tend to do it to try the product before they buy... beyond the usual 30 days trial peroid...
 
On all this petty piracy - who knows the law with recording stuff from TV on a VCR/PVR/DVD? Isn't that piracy? Yet we all own one of those...
Or is there some legal clause about "personal use" which most stuff is pirated for anyhow...?

I admin its kinda impossible to look at 200gb of content.. so i would think im just doing it for the mere fact of collecting.(would say watching 80GB's a month is more realistic)
HDD space for my one pc is shown in my Sig. Have a Second pc with 10x300GB HDD's as well. Making a quick sum :
PC1 :
12x500GB's (-1 for RAID5) = 5500GB
PC2:
10x300GB's(-1 for RAID5) = 2800GB
2x500GB(Raid 1) = 1000GB

TOTAL = 9300GB

Have about 2500GB free in total. And almost none full size DVD's. All 1 or 2 disc AVI, or 350MB for Tv-series.
Cant wait for that 1TB drives to drop below R1k each. :)
PS.
Altho i download 200GB at the LAN, i upload an average of 2TB in the 36 hours i am there.

but yes ur right... me needs to spend less time at pc... Sorting out all the stuph takes up an insane amount of time on its own!!

If they choose to use something different than what is provided that is their concern. I can not dictate to them what their values should be, who says mine are right. It's more than likely if they do choose something else it will be open source or free anyway.
Its both. Whenever there is a ruling from ICASA that Telkom does not like, they bring out the lawyers. They try to avoid a level playing field as much as possible. Even businesses should be bound by ethics.

Again ethics are a matter of perspective. Most businesses will bring out the lawyers if given half a chance. Legislation should be able to withstand it. If it can't it's not the fault of the business.

Well, actually it's not commercial but private use. It's only commercial when you use it to make money. In that case there's a lot of licenses that allow for private but not commercial use or not without paying.

That falls under fair use. It's only when it's redistributed or not for personal use that it's copyright infringement. You are legally allowed to copy copyrighted material for your own use but not to offer material for copying. Whether someone agrees with that or not it's the law and morals have nothing to do with it.
 
It's funny how people always say "well it's the law so it doesn't matter if you like it or not". Then we get to something that's legal or questionably a minor infringement and usually the same people say "well what about morals". Kind of a double standard.

So if I record shows off the TV set and stick them on DVD's, thats OK, but if I do the same with a rented movie or video game?

They say possession is nine tenths of the law. Well intent is the other nine tenths. If you record something for personal use it's ok but if you do it with the intent to distribute it that's not. There's no difference in the medium used. Rented movies may be different because you enter into an agreement and there's an exchange of money to conclude the agreement. I don't know if there's a provision for agreements, probably is.

Interesting - how powerful is python / ruby for scripting compared with VBA?
I see no ODBC support :(

At least there is an admission from the developers:
MS Access is far more mature and feature-rich, its development consumed dozens of man-years.
MS Access has established a large and active user base and support web sites. Kexi is a startup in this area.

But it is a move in the right direction I guess - anything but Jet is a move in the right direction. Thanks - will take a look.

Oh, and the windoze version costs R400+ per license... :(
Limitations of The Demo Version
No guaranteed technical support (reports and questions are welcome though)
Maximum of 5 objects of every type (table, query, form) allowed per database.
MS Access tables import: 100 first rows (practically, in random order) is imported for every table. There is no limitations for the number of tables though.
No built-in documentation.

Maybe we SHOULD all dwnld more....hehehe.

Obviously it keeps all the evil doer-killers at home busy in front of their pc's and dvd players.
