Bike / Scooter Question

I have a few questions about owning a bike or scooter:

1) What are the license requirements? Is a regular driver's ok or is there a special license?

2) What is the minimum engine size permitted on a highway? 125cc?

3) Any recommendations for a freeway-worthy, cheap (+/-R10k) bike / scooter, pref. auto transmission?

Do a search in the motoring section, there've been a few threads about this that you might find useful. But briefly, yes, you need to re-do your learners and do a test similar to the drivers. If you do the test on a bike 125cc or less, though, you won't be allowed to ride a larger bike, and if you do want to, you have to re-do the both learners and bike test again.

I'm actually not sure what the minimum engine size is, but I wouldn't recommend getting anything smaller than a 125cc. You end up riding it flat out all the time, and you don't have any power to spare when you really need it.

You have to have an Code A1 license to drive a 125cc and a Code A license to drive anything bigger. Your learners license for a motorcycle is valid for any size of motor cycle , unless you are still under 18 then the learners is only valid up to 125cc .

Ther is no minumum engine size for driving on the highway that i know of.

For freeway driving try getting something like a 175 or higher.

The risky part of driving without a license is not about the cop that might stop you, it's about what happens if you are in an accident. No insurance company will pay out if the driver of the vehicle does not have a license. It also won't do your case any good if the other guy gets nasty and decides to sue you or something..

My above mentioned bud got into a nasty accident on his Vuka - miracle he is alive. Owners of the bakkie that hit him where prepared to pay all expenses, including a private nurse for 2 years (they have a good heart and where not avoiding a court case) but their lawyer had to withdraw the offer once they found out he had no license.

He had no medical aid !!!

Until it happens to you or your friend, you never realise the importance of protective leathers and a valid licence.

I'll say get a license and do it the legal way. I mean you're half way already, cause you've got your learners already.

As for suggestions on what scooters, please, and i ask again please don't go for this cheap china scooters. If you can afford brand names like honda, yamaha or suzuki, go for them. Otherwise I strongly suggest a Kymco. I know a lot of people who own scooters, a lot went for the cheap china ones, and I can say 90 % of them have endless troubles. Frequent breakdowns, and then to get repair parts is also a mission, these people never have stock. On the other hand I know a friend who own a Kymco, and he had a few already. He upgraded from 125 2 stroke, to a 125 4 stroke, the 200 4 stroke, and now 500 4 stroke. All scooters. He never had any, any issues with any of the scooters, no breakdowns, anything at all. And when you drive that bikes, you can just feel the quality. They're more expensive as the china bikes, 125 cc 4 stroke is like R12 500, while the Jonway is R8000 I think. But believe me, it's money well spent.
