Billion 5102S Question?

After looking very carefully through the docs etc - I noticed that the 5102S only has one port - #%$@!

Will I be able to drop a switch onto that port and connect the 3 pc's up for net access?

Hi BrandOfRiva,

Please note that the 5102 with integrated 4-port switch will be available from end of April.

To answer your question: yes you can drop a switch onto the ethernet port of the 5102S and connect 3 pc's to it for netaccess via the 5102S without any problems.

Please dont buy this modem, since telkom upgraded to version Y1.3.1 (was Y1.2.1 previously) my smc modem didnt work untill I upgraded its firmware. With the billion I havent seen a firmware update yet to fix this problem. It syncs fine but drops more than 70% of the atm packets...

Hmmm,

Interesting,

My friends also has this modem, and he often complains about package losses.

But not as severe as yours!!

We've put it down as a Telkom problem (ie line, exchange, server or something)

maybe this could be a reason??

:)

Hi everyone,

The 5102S is a brand new model, only released in March, which is why there are no firmware updates available yet.

We are not aware of any atm packet loss problems, but will follow-up immediately and keep you posted.
We are running diagnostic tests currently without any errors so far.

Tinuva and louisp, can you please inform us on the model you are experiencing this problem with.

Thanks very much for your efforts here Billion - I only need to purchase my modem in a week or two so I'm really hoping the problem is not with the Billion modem.

p.s. I have noticed connection drop problems on a friends ADSL (non-Billion modem).
Reasons were:
1. No line filter (solved - far improved now)
2. Apparent random every few hours - guessing most likely telkom but can't confirm.

Packet loss doesnt seem to be a problem.

Yup will do!!

Let me just state here very clear!!

As far as I'm concerned the billion modem works 100%.

We had no trouble installing, and had no disconnections etc. The price is very fair, and the support has been more than adequate.

Only problem we had is a few package losses. But this could be due to numerous other factors of which only one might be the modem. My feeling is that it is NOT the modem, but it should be kept in mind.

Thanks for the support, I will contact my friend and get the exact model. As far as I know, its not the new one, but still the previous model.

Wow that was a fast response!

Ok I have the Billion bipac 5102SM adsl2+ modem (sweet cute looking thing).

Now it took longer than my smc7204bra modem before it synced. It takes about 30 seconds just for the pppoe connection to connect then. then lets say I do a ping 196.25.69.222 (very good pretoria saix server to ping, as I live in pretoria)

And 1 out of 4 packets will make it back in fast time. Now let me just say, before telkom upgraded my smc modem worked fine, it just didnt sync after they updated our exchange. So then I upgraded firmware on my SMC modem and now it works (I think 1 out of 100 packets maybe still drop + I am running beta firmware on my smc modem now)

Anyhow untill this billion get fixed I am gonna use this smc modem. I think the problem with this billion is that it is also having problem with the atm network since telkom updated our exchange. It would probably work 100% before they made the update.

ok the adsl version in our area:

DSL Version: Y.1.31.1
Standard: Multimode

That is from my SMC modem's status page. It used to say Y.1.21.1 (I know because I still have a screenshot of it saying that). And it it since that version changed that I have had problems with my line...

Tinuva ... that DSL version that you are referring to is the revision of the low level firmware running in the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) part of your router system that handles the very low level ADSL communications to the DSLAM in the exchange.

Has nothing to do with Telkom.

That is loaded as part of your router firmware.

If the previous firmware worked then I would suggest that you reload it and the DSP firmware that worked for you then will also be loaded back.

I am on ADSL 192 - how do I check if I have "packet losses"?
What do you reckon the d/l speed should be on the 192 connection?

no, my whole point is since they upgraded the exchange, the previous firmware couldnt sync anymore, the upgrade was necessary to get the modem to sync again...

Even if that is the lowlevel firmware that run in my modem, it means telkom did upgrade something on their side, otherwise my modem wouldnt need a newer version...

Also for my modem to run Yx.xx.x on this side, it means they have to run something similar on their side, its impossible for users to run multiple random versions and they run nothing, because then the technology wouldnt be able to work, for anything needs at least 2 entities to hold a conversion (eg. 2 devices to communicate with each other...)

Are you saying telkom doesnt run firmware on their equipment, and that they cannot upgrade it to a newer version which works better?

Look. I had firmware 1.01 on, now 1.03 with which my modem atleast syncs again with. If telkom didnt upgrade anything, 1.01 should've still worked (but why didnt it?)

Now every technology has standards, and revision upgrades on top of current standards. A simply example:

802.11 = Wireless NIC standard...
802.11a = 11mbit in 5ghz range (i think)
802.11a = 11mbit in 2.5ghz range (once again i think, but i couldve mixed it up)
802.11g = 54mbit again in 2.5ghz range

That is just an example of how wireless revisions came out on 1 standard.

Now Telkom is running the Y-version adsl whether that is on the dslam or bras doesnt matter, the client need a modem which can understand this "language" their equipment use. If they upgraded it, most/some client will probably need to upgrade as well if their equipment dont understand the newer version or has something in thats incompatible with the new version.

It is just like k56flex doesnt understand v90 without an upgrade (56k modems)

Because your modem firmware was buggy in the first place ... why did DLINK or Netgear or other type of modem owners not complain about the same problem on your exchange when Telkom upgraded it ???.

You really can't blame Telkom because your modem manufacturer has not implemented the international xDSL standards correctly.
