Hi there,

Im just checking out the ADSL market for the first time and Im looking for a modem that would work with telkom's adsl(their's are too expensive). My flatmate and I are sharing the cost's so we need to share the bandwith aswell. Will the Billion 5102SM be able (1) Work with telkom's adsl and (2) be able to split the bandwidth or should I split it myself with some sort of software? I read something on this forum about packet loss with the Billion 5102SM, was that resolved with firmware updates or was that telkoms fault?

The Billion 5102SM is a modem only. Though it's technically possible to share your internet connection through software, you'll really need a router with more than one port such as the 5102 (the 5102S has a single port BTW). It will do everything for you automatically (almost ;)). The shared PC won't have to be switched on all the time either. I've found the Billion router to be as stable as a rock....

I agree with wajordaan. I have the single port billion 5102. I am very happy with it. Though if you want to share a connection get the 4 port one or the wifi one. I have only heard bad stories bout the telkom modem. a Few people I know actually switched over from the telkom modem to the billion !

why on the earth didnt you take the "free router with line" option?? or doesnt that apply anymore?

Anyways get a router.. modems suck cos when you shut down ur pc - no more internet for flatmate. No need to buy a expensive fancy pants wireless one tho.. that just encourages the next-door neigbours to "share" as well ;)

It applies only if you want to sign your soul over to the devil for 2 years.

I've just received my Billion 5102SM modem, and I was mucking around with it last night (I don't have my line installed yet).

From what I can find, it seems to be a pure modem. There is no web interface on it like there would be with a router, although I notice that it has an IP address of 192.168.1.254, and it has port 21 (FTP) open, although I could not login to it.

There are two ways you can go about "sharing" the device.

The first way would be to plug the modem into a hub or switch, set all your pc's IP addresses to 192.168.1.x where x is anything from 1 to 253 (254 being the modem).

I'm not sure, but you might need to set your default gateway to 192.168.1.254, although you could just leave it empty.

You would then configure a new internet connection on each PC, but you would need individual ISP accounts, unless you had one that allowed concurrent logins.

The second (and probably easier) way, is to use 1 PC to connect to the modem, and then use Windows Internet Connection sharing to access the net.

Oh, and make sure you have personal firewall software on your machines.

Things is, hmm I honestly don't see anyone but telkom suplying adsl lines for the next 100 years nvmd two years. So whats the fuss abt a 2 year crontract?

And yep ICS(internet conection sharing) In windows is quite nice. Tho what I used to do was have a old p3 machine under my bed with modem, ICS, win2k and a switch to connect all 3. That way you dont have to worry abt a game freezing or similar prob on your personal machine and losing the connection 'cos of pc reset.

billion 5102

I hear you Lipe123 but I can't get a cheapo machine as my internet server right now(cash flow), But the Billion 5102 router is like R200 more and it could possibly handle all the bandwidth splitting I need without additional software, right? And it has a firewall.

Is this the cheapest I can get it?

a router is defenitley your best option, as for price hmm lemme see what i have to sell...

R420
Gigabyte® Wired Cable ISDN/DSL Broadband Router, 1x WAN, 4x LAN 10/100

The other ones on my pricelist doesnt specify if they support dsl, pm me later and I might know.

Anyways gigabyte should be a good enuf thing and thats my sale price most pc stores should be around there or they are ripping you off.

Ps. I only realised that was a link, HOLY CRUD! 624.00?!? is that router made from gold?

Gigabyte GN-B40 vs Billion 5102

The thing is that the Gigabyte GN-B40 is only a router where the Billion 5102 is a router and a modem. Or am I understanding this incorrectly?

I do not pretend to be an expert but from text below it is clear to me that GN-B40 needs a modem to connect to internet...........or am i wrong??

The GN-B40 is a broadband router with 4-ports fast Ethernet switch. The GN-B40 is suitable for both beginners and more advanced users to setup and manage the network at home or in the office. This featured packed broadband router will be your home networking solution, with its easy to use web-based interface for network configuration, management and status monitoring you can be sure you are getting the best and most secure connection available.

You know what... I have no idea. i honestly never seen a router that doesnt have the ablitiy to connect like a modem does.. but i guess its possible. Mail gigbyte.

router = router
modem = modem
modem/router = no such thing

Sometimes I get confused, but as I understand it

router = router
modem = modem
modem/router = router with built-in modem

Most of the time when somebody refers to a router i.c.w. ADSL, they mean a router/modem. To make things worse, some routers are called DSL routers, but they don't have a modem, they're just ADSL capable.
