Hi,
My ADSL 192 line was installed this week and I bought a Billion 7100G Router/WiFi-hub.

I can access the router from my web browser (Mozilla on Win2K Pro) but I cannot get the thing to connect on the internet. The Telkom technician was here and did confirm that my ADSL line works. I am also subscribed to Telkom ISP with 2G cap.

I have the following questions:
1) Should I use "PPPoE LLC", "PPPoE VC-MUX" or "PPPoE None"
2) Do I enable/disable "Virtual Circuit", "Bridge" and "IGMP"
3) Do I enable DHCP client and if so what sould be the "Host Name"
4) Under WAN settings, what should I make the static IP address, Mask and Gateway. Telkom's (incompetant) support gave me 2 IP addresses - 196.25.1.1 and 196.25.1.9. Where should I type these in.
5) Under LAN settings can I leave the IP address at 192.168.1.254 and the subnet mask at 255.255.255.0?
6) My DHCP is enabled under LAN so my Win2K PC must be set to automatic IP address right?
7) Is there some typical firewall setup for this device for a SOHO somewhere that I can use?
8) Lastly: when I get all the above working, how do I het my browser (mozilla) to stop trying to use the dialup connection.

I have searched through this forum and read a lot of posts but could not find the answers to my questions. I saw in previous posts that there are people with exactly the same Router so maybe they can tell me how theirs is set up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

regards Johann

1) PPPoE LLC
2) Enable Virtual Circuit, VPI: 8, VCI:35
3) Yes, leave it blank
4) Don't enter anything there
5) Yes
6) Yes
7) No idea...
8) Tools, Options, Connection, Direct Connection to the internet

Hi Johannkok,

BILLION modems are set with South African specific default settings. You can verify this by doing a factory reset on the unit (paperclip in the back for 10 seconds) - please allow a minute or 2 for the unit to reboot properly.

After the reset, verify on the Quick Start page of the unit that the VPI is set to 8 and VCI to 35 - if so, the unit is set for South Africa and you only need to enter your ISP details on the bottom of the Quick Start page to get connected.

Dabean's answers is correct and you can use them as well.

Hope it helps ;)

Hi Billion :)

I bought a Billion 7101G wireless modem a few weeks ago, and noted with dismay that it has now been obsoleted and replaced by the Billion 7202G, which supports ADSL2+.

My question is, will a firmware upgrade be made available for the Billion 7101G that will make it ADSL2+ capable? I know we don't have ADSL2+ in this country yet, but Telkom is experimenting with it (unofficially) and we may see an introduction of ADSL2 or ADSL2+ at the end of the year / next year. So I would be loathe to have to buy a new ADSL2+ modem in the near future!

Also, where can we obtain firmware updates for the SA-specific Billion modems?

Cheers :)

Hi titanium,

Unfortunately the 7100G can not be upgraded to ADSL2+. ADSL2+ is chip dependent.

All BILLION products are distribted with South African specific settings by default and firmware downloads on www.billionsa.com is also South Africa specific.

Hope it helps. ;)

Thank you guys, it turned out that the biggest problem was the operator at TelkomISP who gave me the wrong username (but correct password). Their pathetic service and total incompetance never ceases to amaze me!

To the guys at Billion:

When I see all the responses posted by you in this forum it seems that you are really focussed on good customer service - keep up the good work. I would also suggest you put a big red sticker on the boxes sold in SA with the words: "Preconfigured for Telkom ADSL".

I have one last Q: do you have a document describing a quick and easy way to set up the 7100G's firewall? If not you should really write a document like that and include it on the CD.

Billion Support

I too only have the highest praise for the Billion support team in South Africa, as I have always received prompt and proper attention to all my problems-generally Telkom manufactured.

Well done guys

To Billion tech support as well:

I hopefully will have ADSL in a few months and I have also seen that you guys are very active here. I am very impressed, and added to what I have read about your products, I will definitely be getting a 7202G. :)

Keep it up guys. :D
