Hello!
I have a problem with the Billion 7202G router, which I cannot diagnose. The router seems to hang:

* Seems only when Torrent's have been running. This started happening when I started using Bittorent.
* When the router "hangs", I cannot access its configuration or the internet via HTTP. Web-sites don't even DNS-resolve (this affects all machines on the lan)
* I can still access boxes on the that are connected to the router
* Running torrents (active connections) carry on running
* I suspect external traffic also comes in ok ...

The only "fix" I found is to switch it off and back on. Everything starts working.

Any ideas??? Anybody experienced this?

I have a feeling that the router gets overflooded with torrent requests and dies ... Can it be?

PS. I am running 1.04c firmware ...

Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem with two D-Link routers as well as the Billion 7202G router which I am now using. From what I eventually determined, having Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) disabled was causing the problem.

To enable UPnP for the Billion 7202G, from your routers web interface go to:
Configuration -> Advanced -> Device Management
From there you can set UPnP to be enabled. Having UPnP enabled means applications running on your computer can configure the router themselves so its best to make sure you computer has all the latest virus updates as well as perform a spy-ware scan from time to time.

Support on Torrents

Hi Paladin,

Would it be possible for you to send your details to [email protected] so we can assist you with this problem.

We would like to troubleshoot the effects of having UPnP enabled aswell.

Best Regards,
Billion Tech

Having the same problem with my 7202G and I have UPnP enabled.

7202G-Torrents-UPnP

Hope you all well,

I have tested two versions of BitTorrent:

1. Latest release (4.2.1) which is recommended for all users
2. Beta Release (4.3.2) UPnP support, system tray icon

I had no problem with the latest release (4.2.1) but picked up inaccessibility issues with the Beta release.

Recommendations:

1. Check the version of torrent software along with its UPnP compatibility.
2. Within the torrent software you are using, check for options that allow the support of UPnP.
3. You can also try using similar torrent applications like, Bit Torrent, Bit Comet or ABC.
4. If you are concerned about security, leave UPnP off, three vulnerabilities within Microsoft's UPnP implementation have been found:
- a remotely exploitable buffer overflow that allows an attacker gain SYSTEM level access to any default installation of Windows XP,
- a Denial of Service (DoS) attack,
- a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

I hope this will resolve you issue. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. [email protected]

Best Regards,
BILLION Tech

As explained above, the problem I was having was when UPnP is disabled.

I am not using BitTorrent so that is not a real solution for my problem. On occasions I run eMule and I know that it also gives problems. It's not just eMule or BitTorrent that causes problems, the router can become unresponsive after "normal" use while UPnP is disabled.

Is this not something to do with the amount of connections that are establish? BitTorrent and eMule would just highlight the problem as they form a couple of hundred connections between the different peers.

Been fixed for some time if you applied the latest security patches.

Maybe you should try upgrading your router firmware to version 1.07. http://www.billion.com/support/download/fd/fd2.htm#fd207

edit: From the release notes of version 1.07: "Solved the BitComet large number of torrent transfer issue which will cause the system crash. Also, the tx error occur in the Ethernet when heavy traffic is performed."

I wouldn't recommend using the above firmware, there are supposedly country specific settings for each firmware.

The latest firmware for South Africa is v1.04c and can be found here. Maybe the question we should be asking is when will version 1.07 be available for SA?

Thats highly unlikely. As far as I know the Telkom ADSL DSLAMS are manufactured by Marconi and are ADSL 1 Annex A complient so there shouldn't be any "local" line abnormalities. It's more likely that Billionsa havn't updated their website. This is clearly apparent by the fact that the website link you supplied has a firmware for an Annex B router (the BIPAC 743). Annex B is ADSL over ISDN which certainly is not available in South Africa. Therefore the billionsa website must be an outdated mirror of the international site. Maybe Billion support guy would like to comment.

Well when I originally contacted Billion about my problem, their support staff told me I needed to use the SA firmware as there were differences between the the SA version and the version listed on the international site. This was also the case when I had the same problem with my DLink router, they also told me to only use the local firmware.

Not only Marconi but also Alcatel and Siemens.

Standards are one thing and below is a fix for a recent firmware upgrade to the Netgear DG834 and notice the section with DSLAM interoperability issues.

"The ADSL driver was updated to improve ADSL2+ performance, to improve power cutback operation, and to fix DSLAM interoperability issues."

I reckon you should go with the firmware release as recommended by the local chaps.

BillionSA, if you guys read this, when will v1.07 be available here? See it was updated on the international site on 22-12-2005. Damn, that was last year and we still dont have it. :D

Hmm... I have exactly the same problem with my 7202G. Torrents, any p2p just kills it. Always the same error message in the system log: "syslog: connection tracking table is full". uPnP on, off, makes no difference. Absolutely annoying. I'm not entirely sure the problem is with the router though; if I close p2p and just leave the router running, I am able to access the net again after about 20 min.

As for the firmware, I am currenly running 1.07 (clicked on the billion link from the configuration page which took me to billion.com not billionsa.com and downloaded from there before I read this post  ). And if the sa version is different to the international version, why is there Annex B firmware for the 743 on the billionsa.com site?

Looks like it can deal with a limited number of concurrent connections, and your torrents etc are causing this limit to be exceeded, throwing the firmware. A bit sad.

Agreed; I read somewhere that it can handle 1024 concurrent connections. Not sure how accurate that is. Unfortunately, even if I limit to 250 connections globally in whichever p2p app, it still dies.

Either disable NAT or get a faster router ;).
