Hey guys,

please inform me as to whether the Billion 800VGT router that comes with the 2 year contract from Telkom is locked,is that standard procedure with a contract.
I tried putting another ISP prepaid account on it,but it will not sync.
The WA consultant said I should try the guest@telkom account,it syncs but I cannot access Telkom sites.
Does that mean its locked, thanks in advance.

Gman the Billion 800vgt is not locked.
It sounds to me that you cannot create a PPP connection. Verify that your ISP details that you have typed in are correct. If this does not sort your problem call your internet service provider to refresh your account and give you new ISP details. When you run your diagnostic test’ what error message do you get?

Hey,
thanks for the quick response.
When I enter the WA details, the light goes steady green but not orange.
What changes do I need to make on the router to even test the Telkom guest account.
I cannot remember the diagnostics error right now,I am at work, will test it tonite though, thanks a mil.

Gman if the PPP stays orange it means that your username and password might be incorrect. Just like i said you have to call your internet service provider to refresh your account and get new ISP details.

t-junction,
the Billion 800 afaik, goes steady orange when it syncs,my Telkom contract account syncs np,steady orange light, then I can access whatever.
When its steady green,no joy no sync, correct me if im wrong.

Hi Gman,

When the ADSL/PPP light is flashing green, then this means that your ADSL line has not synchronised.
When it is lit grean (steady), then this means that your ADSL can synchronise but you have not made a connection to you ISP.
When it is lit orange (steady), then you have made a connection to your ISP and you will have internet access.

From your previous posts, I can see that you ADSL line can synchronise but you are unable to connect to your ISP. I would assume that the problem lies with you ISP or your ISP details. Can you confirm they are correct and that your ADSL account is active?

I hope this clears up the uncertainty and we can get this sorted out.

Gman when the ADSL/PPP light is on and steady green it means that your ADSL line is does sync and its working.
When the ADSL/PPP light is orange it means that you have created a PPP connection or an internet connection; In which your ADSL/PPP light should stay orange at all times.

Billion router

I had a client with a similar problem, sounds like a verification/authentication problem with Telkom, if this is a new ADSL installation your ADSL line would have to be verified on the telkom network.
The link is as follows for verifying your ADSL connection -- http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

I can confirm that Tellkom does not do network locking on there routers...
I have also dropped you a pm message for further assistance

Telkom Adsl Line adsl verify problem - please help

HI chappies , I have a very unique problem.

WE installed the adsl router Linksys (Cisco) wag 200g, have installed about 80 of them.

After installation In entered in the correct adsl user name and password
Then I got my adsl light to solid and then the internet light when sold green as well.

When i notice that i can only browse Telkom site , my next step to go
http://www.telkom.co/za/verifyadsl
Got in to the first section, that was successfull

Request received successfully.
Please wait while the response is formulated by the verification server
. Then it failed with a nice X

Then it came up with a error cannot contact the adsl verification service, and i had a nice red X on my screen.

Picked up the phone called 0800375375 , after a very long wait, spoke the operator , and she told me that there is a problem on the Telkom adsl verification service and I must try a bit later , tried it for the 3 hours same result.

The next morning when I tried it again got the message that says

Your ADSL Service request has already been processed.

My problem now is I still can only browse Telkom site and after phoning Telkom hotline no 0800375375 , got them to answer , they told me to call, 10215, took me about 10 times as well they told me they cannot help me , must phone 0800 number again .

After phoning them they told me he don’t know what to do, so

You could contact Telkom's help desk and request a recreation on the port at the exchange, this in turn would set your verification state back to the default status hence allowing you to verify the DSL line again.

Hi, i had the same problem, when adding my Telkom account the light will switch to orange and everything works fine. When I change the account settings to my Web-Africa account, then the light never changes to orange. If you then save your settings and switch off the router, then unplug the router for 10 sec. and plug in again and start up the router. Then it works fine with the Web-Africa account. The router doesn't refresh the IP's / Dns and everything so that it can use the Web-Africa account.

Please restart your router to factory default settings and ask your service provider "web africa" to refresh your account.

I was told by no less than 3 telkom operators, including a supervisor, that all the Telkom modems have Telkom firmware with all the settings pre-installed to make setup easier. If you restore factory settings, you will get all the Telkom stuff back. In a sense, they are semi-locked.
