Previously Vox Telecom Technician helped me to setup my Billion BiPac 6200NXL to receive adsl connection from Billion BiPac 5200S RC in under ten minutes over the phone. Worked excellent.

Moved to a location where adsl was not an option, so didnt use the 5200RC for more than a year, but recently things changed and I decided to go with Afrihost as ISP.

Although I've spent about an hour in total on the phone with two Afrihost technicians, the setup with the modem and router is not working. Also requested setup details from Billion, received a one liner reply, to which I replied with extensive questions and havent received a reply on that yet.

So this is my last resort, is there anyone out there that has a Billion router and can help me with the setup please?

The 5200S RC is the ADSL modem with only one DSL port and one ethernet port.

The 6200NXL is the router that needs to distribute the ADSL over wifi.

The 5200 is working 100% on its own, but as soon as the 6200 is connected via the WAN port, internet connection is lost.

The ENCAPSULATION choices for the 5200 is:

a) Dynamic IP Address
b) Static IP Address
c) PPPoA
d) Bridge mode

And the first connection choice for the 6200 is:

a) Optain an IP address automatically
b) Fixed IP
c) PPP0A

If only I can know which combination is the correct setup I can try the different settings in the combinition,
but so I didnt manage to succeed.

In Bridge mode the Internet light on the 5200 goes red, and if I use the PPPoA choice for the 6200 the internet light on the 6200 goes green.

The internet works then in some terrible way where no pictures or videos is displayd and every website takes forever to open, but it is connected... with the wrong settings.

Would appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on the problem.

Hey,

Not sure why you need to have the 6200NXL do the dail-up, but if you just want to use it as a AP all you need to do is to set up both in the same IP range and on the 6200NXL change the DHCP settings to DHCP relay mode. If it asks for a DHCP server IP just enter the 5200's IP as the server IP.

Hi dtj,

Its both billion routers, so the default IP address is the same. Should I enter the Default IP address or the Encapsulation IP received from the ISP?

The default IP on the Billions are 192.168.1.254 so just make sure that one is changed to lets say 192.168.1.253. If the IP of the 5200 is 192.168.1.254 and the IP of the 6200NXL is 192.168.1.253 after you changed it , enter the relay server IP on the 6200NXL as 192.168.1.254.

I need the 6200NXL to connect another laptop and devices to the internet via wifi. Bought it originally for its 3G capability. The 5200S RC is a very basic router with just the DSL port and one ethernet port. The 5200 is working 100% on its own though.

Ky, I set the 6200 to DHCP relay and put in the default IP. Also set the EWAN protocol to obtain IP adress automatically. The internet light lit up green, thats good, but unfortunately there is no internet connection coming through... eg when I open a website it says "webpage not available". It also show in the notification area that I dont have internet connection with an exclamation mark.

Any ideas?

Ok the way I see it the 6200NXL will only be used as a switch and AP and there is no need for dial-up, therefore change from the ewan port on the router to one of the standard LAN ports and try again.

dtj, you genius!!!

As soon as I moved the ethernet cable form the WAN port to Ethernet port, the Internet light went yellow... but... the internet is WORKING!!!

Thanks a million, after a week of struggling with Afrihost and Billion technicians, you really made my week!

I also use the 5200 in conjunction with an AP, it's a brilliant stable little modem, think I paid R140 for it a couple of years ago when my Marconi gave up.

Glad you got it working Gert.
