Hi there,

Does anybody know why the following would not work...

I have setup a Billion 400G router (IP: 192.168.1.2), which connects via a telkom line. Connected to it is one printer 192.168.1.60 and one laptop 192.168.1.201 using normal ethernet cables, as well as other guest laptops being able to connect wirelessly. That is all fine :)

Then I have a network cable connected to the above router running to the other side of my house (only about 10m through the ceiling) - and connected to it is a Netgear 8 port 10/100 switch. Plugged into the switch is another printer 192.168.1.7.

When I plug in my laptop into the Netgear switch - I can't ping the Billion Router 192.168.1.2 for some reason. If I plug the same cable that runs from the router into my laptop I can ping the router so that eliminates the possibility of the cable being faulty. With regards to the Netgear, I can ping the 192.168.1.7 printer when my laptop is plugged in and the Netgear switch is brand new (I've actually swapped it out twice because I thought it was faulty).

So basically it seems to me like there's something retarded with the routing, surely when I plug my laptop into the Netgear switch, I should be able to ping and access the Billion router. Also - when connecting via Wireless through the router I should be able to access the printer 192.168.1.7 which is not currently the case. Is there any kind of routing rules I need to put into the Billion Router?

All PC's and printers have 192.168.1.2 as the default gateway and all have a unique IP starting with 192.168.1.xxx and the subnets are all 255.255.255.0.

Please can someone help shed some light on what could be wrong?

Thanks
Peter

If the Netgear is a switch, it probably isn't doing any routing. I just hooked up a switch to my router last night and had to do zero configuration.

How are you configuring the laptop ? Is it auto IP ?

I see that everything else is static.

Does the laptop connect when you put it directly in to the Router ?

Yep - everything is static since I thought initially that DHCP was responsible for the problems. I have made all PC's and devices have a 192.168.1.xxx IP with subnet 255.255.255.0 and default gateway as the Billion Router 192.168.1.2.

I know it should just work with the switch - which is why I am going nuts with this lol. It seems to me that maybe the router isn't routing the traffic properly. The switch works when I plug in and ping the printer 192.168.1.7 - but it just doesnt relay traffic between the router and the switch. VERY strange lol

PS. I have tried 3 different laptops with the the following 2 tests...

1. Plug in one of the laptops into the Netgear switch and try access the Billion Router
2. Plug in the same laptop into the Billion router and access the printer 192.168.1.7 via the switch.

In all cases no luck :(

In theory what you have done is correct.

I would place the blame squarely on the POS Billion 400g. I've got one of these and the list of mysterious failures on this thing are unbelievable.

There seem to be a failure cycle:

First the ADSL sync drops, to fix this you must reset, this fixes the the ADSL sync but screws up the DHCP, so I then set everything to static, then the wireless randomly drops connections left right and centre, once this is fixed the ADSL line speed drop to almost nothing despite having excellent SNR. A reset of the router fixes this however then some of the wired ports refuse to work, once all of this is sorted things work for about half a day then the DSL sync goes :(

I fully understand why Telkom is givning these things away. They are rubbish. I've ordered a netgear as I've never had any problem with them...
