Any advice on where to get really good biltong, *real beef* at a reasonable price. I'm a bit worried of using the old places I used to go to because I'm not sure of the quality.

Biltong in Cape Town is very pricey.

I don't really know where to buy.

The biltong shop in the DeVill-Centre (next to the coffee shop) has nice biltong but are crazy expensive imo.

Cape gate mall next to the Checkers is a Biltong shop. Just ask them for the wettest biltong they have and they take one off the shelf to cut it for you.

It's a bit far for you but there is a biltong shop in Constantia Village that has top quality product at very reasonable prices

If you go past Tableview sometime there is a old guy that stand by his car and sells biltong in Gie Rd. I have searched high and low for quality in cape town and I find this guy to be the best so far. He makes it himself and only use top quality 100% beef. Very passionate about his biltong and you can taste the quality every time.

I have tried every butchery in tableview and the supermarkets and the biltong shops and everything tasted really bland.

There are two places in Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River who has delicious biltong! One is next to Game and the other at the entrance of SuperSpar

Have you tried making your own?

Yes, tried it recently, bought one of those al cheapo biltong makers and it worked out really well. Still a bit expensive though, with having to spice and prep and then you lose half the weight of what you hang.

At least when making your own it dries to the point that you want, its not "wet" like you buy at most shops these days. The longer it hangs, the less profit for the wily entrepreneur.

Had some biltong from pretoria on saturday, you can't buy that stuff here. The price the guy mentioned was also really cheap but I can't remember the amount.

Eit: Think he said R80 or R90.

I'm so used to Meat world in Joburg selling biltong at R130/kg I was shocked that I couldn't find biltong for less than R240/kg anywhere around Tableview.

Ive just decided to make my own. I need to find that biltong thread again.

to make 1 kg biltong you need 2kg meat

and they say you must use silverside or something and thats +-R60/kg so with spices it costs around R130/KG making your own

I worked out that it was costing me about R90 a kilo to make biltong in the middle of last year, but that also depends on how long you let it hang.

I'll do the maths again and see.

it takes around 4 days they say

depending on thickness

im still trying to find the box and stuff to make the biltong drier :D

too lazy

lol. easier to buy it. I think they where on special at checkers last time I saw.

The longer you let it hang, the lighter it gets, so technically your cost per kilo goes up.

Reminds me of my father inlaw that buys the driest bilting he can because he is getting more per kilo, tho he does prefer it wetter :p

Me, I'd rather pay for what I enjoy.

i enjoy it wetter and soft so il probably dry it for way less time

and the only place that did sell halaal biltong for cheap was fruit n veg at access park ..they have specials for R99 sometimes

from bellville thats far
