Hi people.
I'm not computer illiterate but I have no idea how to update my bios. It's a old mobo. It's a MS-6533. Can someone maybe tell me step by step how to do this in basic terms.

Thanks in advance
Ghost

Before we get into the steps, are you updating because it resolves a critical issue or for some other reason?

I work on the "if it ain't broke" principle :D

get a six pack of beers.
Drink one.
wait 5min
drink another one.
google MB model + Bios
Drink another beer
Download the bios
Drink another beer
Download the Bios Loader software (if not included with bios)
Drink another beer.
ermmm, unzip the bios
Drink another beer
might have run outa beer by now, so go buy another few
ok, freshly back from shop
open another beer
run Bios update program - 2 types, windows based install or dos (from stiffy)
Drink another beer
don't switch off the power while updateing the bios
remember to backup your current bios
drink another beer.
If the pc starts up after the bios update
open a beer and celebrate
else
open a beer and remose about ur dead MB,
go get a new MB & and few more beers :D

That pretty much sums up my bios update procedure, but with a little less beer drinking.:p

It's old, and I heard that the new bois updates have more settings. I also later want to use that old pc to experiment with OC'ing. Before the nasty comments come about how do you want to learn how to overclock if you don't even know how to flash bios, I know. I have to start somewhere.

I think you might have misinterpreted TT’s advice, I doubt if it was meant to be derogatory? The steps in the 3rd post is accurate, if that helps, you can swop beer for whisky, if you want. :D

No worries :) I just don't understand people (not you, of course) updating a fully functioning BIOS for no reason except "This one is a newer version, so it must be better, right?" I was just curious regarding the reason of the BIOS update :)

I have to start somewhere.

Kudos on asking before attempting the update, you're much more sensible than I was when I started updating a computers BIOS :o Yes, I have bricked a motherboard before. No, I don't want to talk about it :D

Not at all, see my reason for asking the question above.

spiderz's steps are quite accurate, though when I do it I try to stay sober :D

Don't use a windows tool to do the update. Don't use any kind of online auto-update.

If the BIOS supports it, use a flash stick with the bios file on it. Alternatively you'll have to use a boot disk style app to update...some or other ___Dos. AFUdos or something.

Often there is a secret key combo you have to press to see the OC settings in the bios.

Maybe the drunkness will make dealing with a bricked mobo easier

I wish you coulda told me that before i updated my laptops bios now the lights that used to go on dont any more...
So now how to i uninstall the bios update?

I just want to update my bios cause there is beer (or whiskey) involved. I am going to followe spiderz steps, step for step!!

lol i always find a whiskey between each step helps calm the nerves whilst waiting to make sure the flash works and yes i have bricked a couple of mobo's in the past :)

p.s. not sure wether due to drunkeness or the wrong bios :p

All this talk about bricked mobo's isn't helping me. . .

lol it is not for the faint hearted, just google for specific methods for your mobo and you should be fine.

I must say i was paraletically drunk when i bricked them and that was from using incorrect bios :)
