Bioshock Copy Protection Stupidity

I believe that there is no legitimate way to remove securom once you've installed it.

These things are typically designed to infiltrate your system just like other malware.

Steam is about the only manageable copy protection I am willing to tolerate.

Won't touch it. I believe there is a fix for it though.

To be honest, I actually quite like steam.

I don't have to have my cds/dvds in the machine to play my games and I have instant access to all my games that I have on steam anywhere in the world as long as I have a decent internet connection.

For me its drawbacks are outweighed by its benefits.

My oh my. Do people also bitch & moan about the traffic, taxes, crime and other countless issues in their lives to no avail? Just buy the frigging game via Direct2Drive, Steam or Retail copy and play the thing.

Perhaps people who moan so much should stick to DOS and avoid the online features many programs, games offer and the internet overall. For now let the rest of the others who will get the game enjoy it regardless of its protection mechanisms.

To have such excuses for a great game is just pathetic.

You're missing the point. What these anti-copy protection programs do, is they mess up and clog up your pc regardless if you pirate or not. And they cause problems to the point that you eventually have to spend money sorting your pc out. Not everybody can fix their own pc's like some of us, and the reality of this is that it costs money! Even if you can fix your own pc, its time consuming having to format and re-install! Its a headache just to get rid of the damn problems! Many of these software companies know that Starforce has bugs and causes havoc on pc's. Some causes the DVD drive not to record Discs (from what i've read) and various other problems!

Well, you all said it.. just plain stupid to have these crazy protection schemes. On the one hand it does stop people from easily making copies for their friends but then again, piracy is so big that even moms go out to buy pirate copies at their local fleemarkets.. heck, my mom done it once and didn't even realize till I told her it was a pirate copy.

I actually have cracks for my legit games just so I don't have to bother with having the CD/DVD in the tray, or to get past some slow loading or plain not working games.

But actually, I miss the old code wheels and security questions like: "what is the third word on the fourth page of the manual?" They should duplicate this today - put a laser 3d image on the disc - near impossible to simply copy, and have you answer questions from that.

The same thing as HL2, whats the point of selling a well known title but you need internet access just to install and play it?? Not everyone has internet let alone DSL. Of course they going to crack it.

My opinion is that they should lower the prices of DVDs, Music, Games etc. That way I would happily pay for the original. Spending R150 - 250 on a music cd, that has 10 song (40min, btw) or a new DVD movie is a bit much.

They will never learn!

The point here is that these companies are harming their legal consumers while those who pirate their games feel no adverse effects. It is just stupidity.

I wonder if the STEAM version is the same?? I Should'nt be Only problem I have with steam is that once you purchase a product it is your too keep forever I prefere to sell my games when I am done with them, no point in keeping it on the shelf to collect dust! and If I buy on steam I buy to keep forever

I also was wondering why the Xbox360 version was flying off the shelves in the USA/AUS/EU and PC not doing so well...

I only buy a game once the NO-CD is created. I have 3 games sitting on the shelf with scrached media that I cannot play, and i'll be damned if i'm falling for that trick ever again.

What I don't understand is that my black PS2 cd's are scratched so badly that they look like them old records, and they still work, but one wee little scratch on a Digital Versatile Disk, and the copy protection is buggered.

LAME LAME LAME.

Just take your scratched cd's to a video store most of them got a grinder looking device that removes all scratches from the disc and it costs R10 - R15

@DigitalSoldier - Sure. So I have to drive somewhere and HOPE that the removal of a couple of layers of plastic from the DVD's will solve my problem, and then they're going to get scrached again, and then I drive off again to remove more layers of plastic at my expense.

Off-topic: However I must admit there is something wrong with that game I bought from Take2. I finally figured out that although I thought it was not installing it actually was. Like a silent install??? wtf? And also it has screwed up one of our PC's by crashing just as it did on an entirely different system but with worse effect by corrupting windows files in the process!! but when I did get the game to work on one PC it was ok, pretty cool game.

I have a big box full of games I have bought over the years. The one game I have been thinking of playing again is HL2 but cant be bothered with going through the whole steam process again. It might be a lot faster now that I have DSL, but I remember getting the game all excited when it launched only to have to wait hours whilst steam did its thing and unlocked files. By the time I got to play it was time to go to bed....

Now Bioshock with this crap. I really was going to buy this game but now out of principal I will wait for a crack and download the game. The amount of activation and copy protection schemes is getting out of hand that it becomes such a mission when it comes time to reload the pc. A big up yours to the producers of Bioshock and any others involved.

Just publish the damn game with one CD key and no other rubbish to push the price up.

This means if you are the type of person like me who formats your computer frequently to to get rid of generic crap buildup, you are screwed. If you frequently shift around games to free up space, you are screwed. If you are a pirate...well, you'll probably come up with a work around, so at least the criminals are safe, right?

Then again, online activation seems to be the only thing that has any hope of curbing piracy. Cracking HL2 took forever, while the standard CD checks are easily fixed with a virtual drive.
