Bioshock Copy Protection Stupidity

I have a big box full of games I have bought over the years. The one game I have been thinking of playing again is HL2 but cant be bothered with going through the whole steam process again. It might be a lot faster now that I have DSL, but I remember getting the game all excited when it launched only to have to wait hours whilst steam did its thing and unlocked files. By the time I got to play it was time to go to bed....

Now Bioshock with this crap. I really was going to buy this game but now out of principal I will wait for a crack and download the game. The amount of activation and copy protection schemes is getting out of hand that it becomes such a mission when it comes time to reload the pc. A big up yours to the producers of Bioshock and any others involved.

Heh!!! Try HL2 with a 56k modem only to time out all the time and get nowhere, then spending over 100 bucks on GPRS to do the update only to realise the first part of the update was STEAM and then comes the game update and will most likely require another 200 bucks. Im talking days later my friend not hours. And I had to give up and go get a cracked version which mind you was so much easier.

So goodness help the guy who made the STEAM idea happen if I happen to walk by and notice him.

You all should stop moaning, very simple in my eyes

Either:

1. Buy the retail copy (then hassel with these protections).
2. Get the retail version and crack it.
3. Get via steam.
4. Buy the pirated version.

just my 2c

For those who missed it:

PC Gamer - A senior editor at PC Gamer found out (the hard way) that the two-at-a-time activation system didn't work as well as the folks over at 2K thought it would.

The Cult of Rapture - The system will now be changed (in a patch) to allow 5 activations ("reinstalls") on 5 machines, and widescreen will be "fixed".

Personally I find it insulting that there is any limit on the activation at all - if I buy a game, I do not want to be told what I can do with it, and if this sort of thing catches on, I shudder to think what it'll be like five years down the line, when people start reinstalling some classic games only to find they don't work.

LOL, sorry to hear that man. I know how p!ssed off I was, got home early, excited to play... Landed up falling asleep face down with the light still on that night waiting for steam. I had dial up back then.

I agree with you 100% there life|form, exactly what will happen 5+ years down the line?! If this is going to be the new trend the only games I will be getting are the pirated kind :(

WOW! 5 now! :P I will just get it off steam or a crack :) they have a crack to stop windows Vista Timer!! so they should have a crack for that :) lol BTW I would buy it but the install thingy freaked me out! unless I have a 200GB + HDD I am screwed cause of my crappy 80GB I only have 4GB's left

Saw this on digg and thought it was quite funny:

http://www.digg.com/pc_games/More_Bioshock_stupidness_you_can_only_install_the_game_twice_WTF

In short: you can only install the game twice.

Now, 2k have responded that if you uninstall it with the uninstaller it registers that and then you can reinstall it again later, but this is incredibly short sighted of them. Say for instance if your computer is stolen, or your hard drive crashes, or you get a virus or you just plain forget before formatting.

I guess it is beyond hope that the retards making these kind of decisions will get a clue and realize that copy protection doesn't work and all it does is harm legitimate customers.

Stupidity.

I was thinking of getting a copy of bioshock for the PC when it came out - now I think I'll give it a pass.

Can you read? Its only if you uninstall it. If you reformat, then it wont count as an uninstall, and therefore wont count to 1 of the 2 chances you get to install. I could be wrong, but im sure 2k wont be that dumb enough to count an install as a point against installing it again. It only apply's to uninstalls.

Still I think Its a stupid system :p or that could be me! :D

WTH!? I indstalled the Demo... runs fine for the fist time game runs, looks GREAT! but as soon as I get to second load screen it crashes... now I HAVE to download a new Nvidia Beta driver :( but it seems as if the install is corrupted!!

btw some folks reported that uninstalling DOESN'T free up a point....

Mmmm... after all this reading I am glad I got a Xbox 360. No issues with copy protection at all. :p

tell me something are the games creators smoking some bob marley tobacco?

think ill play it on the 360, waste of money for PC users.

Hence the very slow PC sales and Exreamly high console sales... ;) IMO 2k shot them selves in both thier feet.

This is utterly insane, but unfortunately a sad reflection of what happens when corporate fools try to force this DRM crap on the consumer. The funny thing is that T2 is probably going to blame the reduced sales of Bioshock on the PC on piracy, and not their efforts to screw their customers. Sure, piracy for this game is going to be huge, but that is directly attributable to this malware, not on an unwillingness by consumers to pay.

I could cry. Take all that fantastic development effort and destroy it with ham handed, ineffective, invasive measures designed to restrict the rights of the cosumer. I personally feel that T2 has given moral license to all and sundry to pirate this game at will. Consumers must defend their rights or accept that they have no rights. Let T2 feel the pain as their work becomes the most played, least paid for release of the year. And purely because of their own malicious actions. Maybe next time they will think of their customers.

Personally I will be purchasing my copy, but only because it's comming to a 360 near me without all this crap.

Is man not entitled to the game he buys?

NO, says the man at Securom. It belongs to 2K.
NO, says the man at 2K. It belongs to us.
NO, says the man at Microsoft. It belongs to our license purchasers.

I rejected those answers.

Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...piracy! Where the gamer would not be censored, where the PC owner would not be bound by petty encryption, where the buyer would not be constrained by corporate greed. And with the downloading of your torrents, piracy could become your salvation.
