So 4 months ago I applied for a vault copy of my birth certificate. As of yet, the amount of progress made at Home Affairs Head Office is basically nothing. It's still "in process". I opened a complaint (as Home Affairs Customer Service advised me to do) 3 weeks ago, and the amount of progress made on that is basically nothing either :erm:. Does anyone have any advice on how I can give Home Affairs a good kick up the *** and get them moving? (Short of going there and physically doing it).

I've tried bunnyhop.co.za, and they say they can't help me as the application is already in process.

Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing? Help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Get a gun and hold one of the workers hostage. Only solution I've seen that worked, you might get shot though.

3 weeks isn't that long in terms of Home Affairs. Should have waited at least 4 wks.

They lost a bunch of docs in a fire anyway, so you might not get a birth cert anyway.

While still living in JHB, I dealt directly with Home Affairs in WYNBERG a no. of times for ID, Passport & birth certificate (approx. 5 years ago, then about 2 years ago). There was never any problem, and in fact, usually got my docs. sooner than expected.

I think you'll need to go to one of the offices to get them to proceed further - in person is always a better option, but Home A. is a more daunting thought than going to the dentist, I know.

The problem all their offices have though, I suspect, is they're reliant on what happens in the main Pretoria offices (is it officially Tshwane?) in so far as processing's concerned. Don't know how much more they can do, than you can by phoning 0800 601 190, but where there are extended delays, going in-person is worth your while.
By the way, Wynberg offices did move, if you plan on going there, so phone & get exact address beforehand.

I opened a case 3 weeks ago, 4 months after I'd originally applied. By their own admission, it shouldn't take longer than 8 weeks. So as it stands they're 11 weeks late :/. As for the fire story, yes they did have a fire but I'm fairly sure that they didn't lose every single the birth certificate, so I'm hoping I can still get mine... otherwise I'm pretty buggered in terms of getting my UK passport.

Bunny hop said basically the same thing to me - go in to my nearest home affairs (DBN), speak to the supervisor, and be extremely strict and stern. The only way I'm going to get anywhere is by putting my foot down in person apparently... I understand that they have a long queue for this sort of thing, and that there's a limited number of people allowed into the vault, but I applied for my brother's when I did mine, and his was ready a month ago. I spose I'll have to go in and have a chat with the supervisor :p

Home affairs, the same people who handed me mine and my wife's copy of our unabridged birth certificate and then informed me that they couldn't produce my son's as they had insufficent information regarding his parents........

The irony, I assure you, was completely lost on them.

I then filled out a form which was basically a "Here's the information cause you guys are morons" form which basically forced through the application.

You need a "Here's the information cause you guys are morons" form, but they might call it something else.

I fastrack applications that have already been submitted to Home Affairs with or without a case number, I also do new applications you are welcome to contact me at [email protected]

For those that get some of the family certificates and not others it is normally caused by the record not being on the system in which case a BI-24 for a birth is required and a BI-30 for a marriage. The most common period for this is between 2002 and 2009, they seem to be more on the ball in 2010. I have done a number of these and got them within a week or two, I do have a BI-24 if anyone would like one, but it does need to be handed in then the next problem arises when it doesn't get to head office so it is a matter of damned if I do and damned if I don't. Anyone needing advice can contact me at [email protected] (my advice is free)
