BitCo Consumer Review

Hi Mike/Garth,

I've been keeping tabs on this thread since I stumbled upon Bitco. Telkom have no lines in my complex and I'll be darned to waste money on unstable LTE/3G. Completed my application yesterday...now holding thumbs for a (hopefully soon) LOS call. When I am standing on my balcony I can see Randburg CBD buildings and few high site towers. Not sure which is Bitco though...

@mike/garth - Can you confirm the building with the high site in Randburg CBD? Looking at the coverage map, it should be close to Kent or Pretoria avenue...

RLB

Hi RLB,

Thanks for the post

We have quite a few options in Randburg / Sandton area

The closest would probably be the one on Kent Avenue in Randburg, the only problem with this area is the large amount of radio interference so links are generally limited to around 3km

You have a very good chance of getting services because their are not many trees in that area and we have a few options available.

best bet is to sign up and get a team to come signal test for you

let me know if you need any more info

Mike

Hi Mike,

That is good news then, cause the high site I think might be yours is like a shining beacon without any obstructions inbetween. I estimate a direct line of about 1km, max 1.5km between me and Kent.

Signed up already, submitted all the paperwork yesterday. Holding thumbs!

Mike,

While we await the results of the FUP testing what highsites do you have around Parktown, next thing is I do not have LOS to one and I've wasted the skin on my fingertips typing these various messages.

this so much

My understanding was FUP was for abuse because ADSL has the 20:1 contention ratio on bandwidth where Bitco is advertised as a 1:1 which means my 5mbps should only be mine?

The technician who installed my dish assured me we do not get a 1:1 contention ratio. He seemed very confused when I told him it says so on the site. he responded by saying no dude, there is no way you getting a 1:1 contention ratio???

So what does that mean?

A true 1:1 means there should be no throttling as your speed is guaranteed, not being shared with others.

Could it not mean we have a 1:1 up until the tower? if that's the case, we should each have our own dish on the tower?

Doubt that, for business lines I'm sure its P2P but for home we must connect to a sector. That bandwidth is not a problem. Its from the tower to the PoP (their network bandwidth) which is limited

A bit disappointed. Signed up, two weeks later techs arrive on Friday to install, got signal, then it was lost after a few hours (?) Equipment was removed and they promised to check again on Monday. No calls or feedback until I called to inquire. Got the final word today (5 days later) that they do not get LOS and will not be installing. This really surprised me as I have a full view of the city from my home and I live in a very elevated area.
Telkom ADSL is not performing as it should because of high attenuation - so I am stuck with a slow 2mb line and 8ta - Aaaargh!

Don't feel to bad, my link has been so unstable the past couple of months, 8ta honestly games better than Bitco, I kid you not... The only upside is the uncapped downloads, but meh I got the Bitco for gaming, and its not doing what I'm paying it to do:(

Hi Sidster

Thanks for the post

If you go with the month to month option you will not own any of the equipment, our product is a managed service so the equipment always belongs to us under our SLA, in the event of anything happening to your equipment we will replace this within SLA at no cost to you.

i would recommend the 12 month option as installation is well priced and fits nicely in the middle

We don't have a self install option at this stage as this is still a very new product to us and we are working to perfect the residential offering before considering things like this

on a 5Mbps connection you should be able to get be able to get that sort of volume on P2P and streaming services if you use your P2P in the night

The new FUP will still kick in like normal with P2P traffic but is aimed to optomise the streaming of online media

Mike

Hi Mike

I've just had my 5Mbs activated and noticed that FUP kicked in after an hour of streaming. Do you have an indication of when the new FUP will be implemented?

Ross

Hi Mike/Garth,

This morning Amobia guys came to do a LOS check (they contacted me on Friday afternoon) and had perfect LOS to 3 of their high-sites in the Randburg CBD. I am currently waiting for the Bitco technicians to give me a call to arrange LOS...I truly hope that I'll have good LOS to Bitco towers, as you guys are my first choice.

Is there any way to get the LOS check expedited on your side?

Mike, did you see this?

Hi Ravetoad,

Sorry for the late reply

The closest high site we have to park town is in a very tall building in the middle of Rosebank

if you climb on your roof and have an unobstructed view of Rosebank you should be good to go :-)

Obviously we would need to come out to site and test as many technical parameters need to be met in order to get a connection to our network.

Hi RLB,

i will have a look into your application and see if i can speed up the process from my side.

Based on your message above you would be very likely to get LOS from BitCo based on your clear view of Randburg.

Remember we don't just check LOS, we also have a list of technical parameters that need to be met in order to get a connection.

The main one in Randburg would be a signal test as that area is full of radio equipment which could potentially cause problems for us.

Please PM me your name so i can find your application and see what date we have loaded for you

Mike
