BitCo Consumer Review

Sure, comtel was one that had great service, but if you cant get bitco signal then go to wapa.org.za and fill in your info where it says find a provider and you will get contacted by people who service your location.

I only need in a couple of months time, but have submitted to the wapa

that sucks
seems all the WISP don't have coverage in my area, Telkom as well... so going with Neotel LTE Uncapped

I considered that option as well, but no coverage.

Luckily I have a couple of WISP providers, pity about Bitco, but from their coverage map I knew it wouldnt work here :(

Good idea thanks. If anyone on Bitco can ping these address for me I would be grateful :).

Hey Guys,

As promised some feedback . Basically one word IMPRESSED !!!!

Got my router delivered yesterday , rushed home and plugged it in and connected all my devices . Did a speed test and was running at 5Mbps a second . Then started my Sickbeard and SABnzb (automated news server download apps for those that don't know) and started downloading the last 4 weeks of episodes and movies between 590 KBps and 605 KBps :) . I got throttled down to 2Mbps after about 3GB of downloading which I knew would happen (gonna happen for a bit as I try and catch up but after that it should be fine) .

I paused my downloads to test the throttled speed performance as well . Started the Youtube channel on my Plex media centre and to my surprise I streamed 720p Youtube videos without any pause for buffering and no buffering during playback :D .

After about 90 minutes I was unthrottled again and it was time to test some Netflix . I set up everything required and streamed Netflix movies and series without any pause or buffering in 480p on the PS3

Really really impressed with Bitco , they really do deliver on their promises , well done !

Special thanks to garthvs who helped me to get my router shipped a.s.a.p and for replying to questions even on a weekend

Ok, so I have a question about the installation / config costs: I see it's R4300 for a month to month contract, R800 for a 12 month contract, and free install / config if you go for 24 months.

A friend of mine is interested in getting wireless internet and called up BitCo to enquire, but he was informed that you never actually own the equipment. So if you go month to month, you pay R4300 to have it installed and configured, but if you decide to cancel the service, BitCo come fetch the equipment - is this true?

Hi Abzolute

Almost correct... The wireless dish and Cisco switch are on lease from us and we will replace any of this if it is damaged or has a fault on it.

The Wifi router that is supplied belongs to you.

It is similar to Telkom, where the cable belongs to them but the DSL router is yours.

Hi Guys,

Just some more feedback about support I received .

I mailed Bitco support requesting them to change the admin password of my supplied router to what I wanted it to be .
12 Minutes later I received a mail that it was changed , that's what I call service , once again , well done !

Pieter

Ok, thanks for clarifying. That's personally a bit of an issue for me though, given that I just recently went with another WISP (which I won't mention here, since I don't want to knock one company in favour of another, especially in a thread specifically about their service). I paid a similar amount for installation, but all the equipment is now mine outright.

In fact, I paid R5k, but that's because I had a complex install to "luckily" get LOS, and to accommodate my requirements for an additional wireless and cabled APs in the house, and installation done on a weekend with a 1 day lead time. A normal install would probably have cost arount R3k. And yes, it will be my cost if something happens to the equipment, but I have household insurance for that.

I do understand Telkom also charge you a (ridiculously expensive) DSL infrastructure access fee of around R400 a month (depending on the speed and whether you bundle with ISP or not), but if I had a similar business I would not compare myself as a company to the likes of Telkom with regard to their business model for internet access... Naked ADSL anyone? So if you don't want that landline, you really are forced to pay around R550 monthly to access that Telkom DSL infrastructure. Anyway, that's my past and I'm not looking back.

It's just concerning how much you're needing to fork out upfront if you decide you don't want to commit to a long term contract (especially given my friend's situation - he will be moving house within the coverage area in the foreseeable future, and then will the install cost be charged again?), and then you still don't own the equipment.

So, would it be possible to buy and have the equipment installed yourself, and then pay a much reduced config fee to get setup on and connect to the BitCo network?

Does anyone here perhaps have the 2mbs account, if so can someone plz do a ping test to mweb servers, I'm going to get this purely for gaming, and if the ping tests are also this low with the 2mb, anything more would be a waste

Ping is not dependant on line speed.
