BitCo Consumer Review

I understand torrents have to be shaped during the day. But when you pay R900 for 5mb a month, it could be a little faster than 10 KB/s... :(

Hi Bitco Rep/s

I am interested in getting a connection from you but I'm curious about a few things and maybe you guys could clear it up for me.
What are the differences between your business and home accounts specifically and also what is your FUP regarding each one.

Found an interesting article from June this year

http://www.techcentral.co.za/bitco-punts-wireless-as-adsl-alternative/48546/

One thing that seems misleading however is this part towards the end of the article "There is no throttling on streaming video services like Netflix, says Van Sittert."

The definition of Throttling from Wikipedia

"Bandwidth throttling is the intentional slowing of Internet service by an Internet service provider. It is a reactive measure employed in communication networks in an apparent attempt to regulate network traffic and minimize bandwidth congestion. Bandwidth throttling can occur at different locations on the network."

So if i understand this correctly, then Streaming should in no way attribute to your line utilisation used to determine when you get throttled or am i wrong

"Dear Philani Dlamini

I can confirm that last night your link was shaped down to 2Mb. Please note that streaming video still classify as downloads and the FUP can still show you down to 2Mb.

My 5 meg line was throttled down to 2 meg for streaming youtube in HD. Hope this clears a lot of questions regarding streaming.
So my friends are staying away from Bitco until they change their FUP policy. Stop recognizing streaming as abuse ffs we pay a lot for this service.

My point exactly

Makes you wonder hey

Hi Guys

We are relooking the time period on the FUP system so that it will not effect streaming unless you watch several full length movies in a row.

We have tested this with about a dozen or so users and the feedback has been very positive.

We will be completing our 10Gbps core router upgrade this weekend and will start implementing the new FUP as soon as the project is completed.

Hope this helps.

Garth

Thank you for the feedback. I have a question regarding the FUP in its current form and in its future form:
My primary source of entertainment is Hulu+, Netflix etc. I have no DSTV as I ditched their pathetic service 3 yrs ago. I stream ALL my entertainment from around the globe.

The times of streaming varies from the after school rush to early morning to the rest of the evening - non-stop. As a new customer using your services, I am happy with the current performance and the fact that I have had no performance dips as yet on the current FUP.

How will I be impacted by the NEW FUP, if I will be impacted? Your feedback is appreciated.

I myself also have no issue what so ever with streaming. Kids currently watching Netflix and I'm watching Netflix on the PC, wife on the Ipad. 3 users, zero issues. Kids are on Netflix from the time they get home around 17:00 and it's on till around 23:00 - 00:00 every night. And the WHOLE weekend.

So it seems as if some clients exaggerate the FUP - based on your feedback we are solid!

:D

Same here. I use it for work all day long, and at the same time stream series for some background noise. In the evenings stream to either 1 or 2 devices. No issues with the current FUP.

Yea, that being said though. It does seem that Netflix is running on priority. Youtube I do need to pause for a bit before watching. Sometimes runs into a buffer. But not a big Youtube user anyway. Does only seem to happen when I'm throttled though. Still no complaints. Wife and kids are happy, and I can do gaming or stream whenever I want :p

Well here is my experience thus far over 2 days:

- Netflix is streaming without buffering.
- Hulu+ is streaming in HD no buffering.
- YouTube is also streaming in HD no buffering.
- P2P worked very well last nite for a 2GB download and was done in less than 3 hours.

My high site is apparently one of the highest capacity ones in my area.

So far so good.

110%

Our biggest complainer suggests that he should be able to view HD streaming 24/7 on a 5Mbps link from international sites. He doesn't even hit it...

I have only ever been affected by FUP on Torrents and Big game updates or Steam downloads. Once FUP'd I only notice some buffering on Youtube. But streaming is still 100%. I don't watch in 4k though :p

OK now i'm am seriously Pissed off

i am currently downloading Saints row 4 from Steam which is 10GB during normal working hours and i am being throttled DUE to the NEW AMAZING FUP which is utter nonsense.

We were promised full streaming and downloads from xbox, ps4 and legit download services from 6am-6pm at the expense that All P2P and torrenting being throttled during working hours.
And this is not the CASE!

Garth this is completely and utterly unfair.
we are being punished for everything we download.

the FUP was better the way it was before this new change over.

At this point i am defiantly paying much much more for crap-loads less.

I look forward to hearing your response to why i am being throttled during normal working hours when in all your previous posts you say we will not.

Regards a very pissed off Customer

Throttled as with torrents? Or throttled at 1/2 line speed?
