Black Friday loses its lustre
South Africa saw a very muted Black Friday in 2023 as the country’s macroeconomic environment and logistics crisis weighed on retailers’ ability to offer significant discounts ahead of the festive season. [Daily Investor]

TV licensing is killing black Friday. That's my theory. TVs are the only things that get a decent discount.

Joburg business culture views a product sold during with a discount in terms of potential revenue lost compared to its normal list price. Maybe some deeper Afrikaaner Culture reason to this attitude.

so there may be hope for your species yet, seems the consumption driven, instant gratification, materialist brainwashing is not as strong as before ...

Maybe half of the potential black Friday stock was drifting in Durban harbour.

My kingdom for a journalist worthy of the name...

Does it relate to the fact people hadn't been paid yet unlike years that have gone before?

I think Cape Town should "seize the mean of production" and take control of Transnet assets in the western Cape. Then appoint a private logistics firm to operate it (selling would be a mistake)

I am sure that within months the backlog will be reduced in Durban.

Got nothing to do with that. If you wanted to spend money, you would have saved up the month before knowing it was a week away from payday. Just like many people uses Novembers' salary to buy Christmas gifts.

Yeah right. You think the world works like it theoretically should. Funny.
