About 3 years ago I set out to buy a flat screen LCD / plasma and - based on the LCDs I'd seen around and family owned - I decided on a plasma. One huge aspect was the black levels which were a dull grey on the LCDs.

I then sold the plasma and bought an LCD and impressed by the black levels which were only slightly off that of plasma and - in some cases - better.

Some of you may still be living in 2007 and not understand the leap in technology - so I'll use this thread to compare black levels of various sets - measured, real black levels.

Samsung LN-46B650 ... 0.07
Samsung LN-40C630 ... 0.07
Samsung LN-46B750 ... 0.04

Panasonic Viera TC-P50U1 ... 0.04
Panasonic Viera TC-P42GT25 ... 0.06
Panasonic Viera Viera TC-P50G25 ... 0.04
Samsung PS-PNC550 ... 0.06

I am happy with my LCD.
The fact that it has practically no reflections on the screen makes it perfect for my lounge.

I'm just battling to see this night / day difference ... they all look fractionally different to me :/

i laugh at those who constantly have to reassure themselves and others that no lcd can touch plasma, its silly really, no use in arguing with those sorts.

I suppose everyone has to admit that both technologies have gotten better over the last 3 years. I had a Samsung plasma from 4 or 5 years ago that was only 480P and it was perfect for what I needed. Recently upgraded and because of my good experience with plasma I decided to stay with it. 5 years later I have a 50" plasma and could never have afforded the same size in an LCD that's for sure.

Also, just because Sony have stopped producing Plasmas doesn't mean they suck. It purely means they concentrating on other technologies. I don't think one will beat the other as they each have their place and one is more suited to specific tasks than the other.

As with another forumite I have convinced my mates to buy Plasma above LCD because they're all sport watching freaks not gamers and also watch the occasional BluRay movie.

Now, without further ado please explain what the funny numbers actually mean.

Bingo!

I'm only just warming up ...

I have a slew of links just awaiting ;) The sad thing is they'll be excluded as they show the bad points of plasma ...

It's not that Dobly (typo but I quite like it;)), the fact is that the difference between the 2 is easily noticable to the man on the street when you view regular TV which is the main reason the man on the street buys an LFD not so?

Guys... Guys... Guys...
Someone poor soul is gonna browse myBB looking for answers wrt buying an LCD/Plasma and is going to leave feeling more confused than before. lol

I agree, here's a safe bet. If you're not sure what you want but want to buy something that will more than staisfy you across the board then buy a plasma.

If you want something specifically for gaming/hi def movies/PC monitor then buy an LCD. If you want for SD TV and sport then buy plasma.

Baddabing, it's that easy

Precisely. Same as what any plasma owner I've come across on these forums will tell you, or anyone promoting plasma.

There's only one forumite muddying the waters here, by bringing in redundant subjects of no relevance to the layman.
